      First hop Ping reply

The first external hop reply's to pings on a super low priority and results in a timeout 99.9% of the time
due to the default 4000ms (4 second) timeout

when i first started it was replying in around 14000 ms (14 seconds)
it is replying in under 1000 ms most of the time now

if you are interested on seeing this you can set the timout higher

this side effect of this seems to be its encourageing a prompter reply from said ip
maybe as it realises it will have to reply....

      Re: First hop Ping reply

On a side note this confirms that FTTC FasTpath is slightly lower latency compared to ADSL2+ FastPath

My old Sky connection on the easynet core netowrk that was on FastPath
used to be around 4.3 ms that did reply promptly to ICMP request though

FTTC Fastpath seems to be around 3.5 ms to the first external hop

      Re: First hop Ping reply

A useful tool for finding best or worst ping time over a route is "mtr" (My traceroute) see: MTR
For Linux there is probably a package available for your distribution though for a NAS you may have to compile from source.

      Code:
      root@bravo:~# mtr -wrc10 2.127.251.89
      Start: Sat Mar 22 00:37:28 2014
