Trying to make use of another Sagem 2504N router

Hi. This is my first post so please be gentle with me.

I currently have 2 x Sagem 2504N routers, one of which I acquired from my sister-in-law who has given up on Sky, so this is a nice predicament.

My question is, how do I make best use of this 2nd router, particularly if I want to boost my wi-fi signal in another area of the house? Someone mentioned 'wireless repeating', but after a bit of research, I don't think I can do this, as I need a router which is 'WDS enabled', which I don't think these are (happy to be proved wrong on that one).

Am I correct in thinking that my best option is to get a 30m ethernet cable and connect the the two routers?

Oh, BTW I also have a wireless anytime box. Don't know whether that would have any bearing on things...

      Any advice gratefully appreciated.

Sadly you won't be able to connect them together via WiFi. The choices are either an Ethernet cable or a pair of HomePlugs. You could run the Ethernet cable behind the wall if you prefer.

To connect them together, please read the guide in the link below:

That's very useful - thanks for your speedy response. Re: step 5, I'm actually on Mac but have access to a Windows laptop that I could at least use to do the config. I'll likely go for the ethernet solution and I also understand that it needs to be a particular standard [cat 5e] once you're talking pretty long lengths.

Re: Trying to make use of another Sagem 2504N router

The guide is composed for finding the IP Address for people who aren't using a Sky router and the IP Address may be different. Since you are using a Sky router, the default IP address is 192.168.0.1.

Otherwise you can do the change with any computer.

Each of the current Ethernet cables will support their associated speeds for a distance of up to 100m. Cat 5 is limited to 100mb and whilst cheap, could be more costly in the longer term if you upgraded to a 1Gbit LAN.

The reason for me recommending Cat 5e is down to cost (it is reasonably cheap at around 50p per metre) and it will support up to 1Gbit speeds should you upgrade at a later date. The crimping tool, connectors and boots are identical for both Cat 5 and Cat 5e.

Cat 6 would support up to 10 Gbit speeds but apparently requires special tooling to make custom lengths.

Decided to go for the homeplug solution as it's neater. Is there a particular spec of homeplug that I need to go for? Would the following suffice?

Re: Trying to make use of another Sagem 2504N router

      They should be fine..

I tend to recommend the "200mbps" as the minimum spec, but some members have complained that some models struggle to support the full speed. For this reason 500mbps is often recommended now.

For most applications the 200mbps adaptors will be adequate.
