Extending my W-Fi with extra ethernet ports

      Hello,

I have my Sky router in one room with all the ports used up and I need to connect some other items to my network via ethernet in another room. I am thinking a need another router with 4 ports, do they just connect to your existing Wi-Fi. Can anyone recommend anything that will work with my router. I have the Sky Sagem F@ST2504n Router. I was looking at this: TP-Link TL-WR841N 300Mbs Wireless N Cable Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories but not entirely sure if it's the right thing.

      Thanks for any advice offered.
      Dan

Re: Extending my W-Fi with extra ethernet ports

Are you trying to just have some additional LAN ports or are you looking to add a WiFi access point as well?

If you are just looking to add some LAN ports, then a Network Switch would be much better.

The next question is how are you going to link the additional ports to the exiting router. Most routers will not allow you to connect via WiFi and when this does work, the connection tends to be quite slow. The best option would be to use an Ethernet cable, perhaps feeding it behind the wall with a wall socket in each room.

Alternatives include HomePlugs and WiFi Extenders.

Re: Extending my W-Fi with extra ethernet ports

Hi, extending the Wi-Fi isn't needed, just the extra ports in another room is what I'm looking for. I was hoping to be able to connect wirelessly but I perhaps the HomePlugs may be the better option. Are there any that have multiple ports on them?

      Edit: something like this http://www.solwise.co.uk/net-powerline-av-3pe.htm

Re: Extending my W-Fi with extra ethernet ports

Yes there are some with multiple ports.

A very quick search came up with these:

4 LAN port 500AV Homeplug Wall Plug: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

      Newlink 200Mbps Powerline Homeplug Adaptor inc 3 Lan Ports with 128-bits Encryption - NL-HP2003PORT - Scan.co.uk

Please do look around for more options and good prices.

Re: Extending my W-Fi with extra ethernet ports

I've got the 3-port Solwise and it works very well. The alternative is to use a single port homeplug and buy a cheap switch - not as neat though!
