      Devices can't see each other

      Hi Team,

I've been happily using the internet on 3 devices:

      Windows 7 laptop - wireless
      Sony Bravia CX523- wired
      Google Nexus One - wireless

But for the life of me, can't get the devices to communicate with each other. With my old setup back in NZ, I used to use the Nexus One (android) to control my laptop via wi-fi, but the phone can't find the computer for some reason. I would also like to use my laptop as a DLNA server for my TV, but again, the TV can't find my laptop. Also, my laptop doesn't show up the Nexus One or the TV in the network map. Finally, I'm unable to ping any of the other devices form my laptop.

The phone can control the TV via wi-fi, so at least that works.

I'm sure I have setup the router or Windows wrong somewhere but can't figure out where.

      What I've tried so far:

      Turning off my firewall
Turning on file and printer sharing
      Turning on network discovery
      Turning off password protected sharing
      Setting the network to Home
Checking the library folders on the laptop are shared
Selecting the stream media options in the HomeGroup settings and in WMP 12

      Any ideas?

      Regards,

      Avi

What DLNA software are you using?

I use various programs now to stream content around my LAN. I also found that on my main PC Norton 360 has blocked everything. With this in mind, could you check your share settings too please?

Re: Devices can't see each other

      Hi,

My sharing settings are as in my first post, are there more I should be checking?
I turned off the windows firewall, AVG and Comodo.
I'm trying to use WMP 12.

It seems odd that I can't even ping the other devices.

      Regards,

      Avi

Have you opened WMP and clicked the Stream button(2nd button on Menu bar at the top). Choose Automatically allow devices to play my media. If you want to access it from outside your network you will have to also select the first item, Allow Internet access.

If the TV is not showing in your router, you will have to go into its settings and set up the network. Usually you can do this Automatically or Manually. I like doing mine manually and giving it a fixed address, which I reserve in the router.

Re: Devices can't see each other

Are you able to access the BBC iPlayer content?

How is the TV actually connected to your router? I have seen someone post on this forum saying that their HomePlug was actually picking up a neighbour's router before now, so this is why I am asking.

Try installing this free software on your PC: Serviio media server

As for you phone, I have a Samsung Galaxy S II. A couple of apps that I have on it are:

All these are able to communicate with my Samsung TV. I can send content from the phone or from my NAS/Desktop/Laptop via the phone. With this in mind, my first check would be to ensure that your HTC is on the same WiFi as your TV, rather than on 3G (it has been known ).

If you phone is unable to see your TV, could I suggest that you check for any settings to enable the DLNA support?

Your phone should also be able to find the Laptop with the Samsung Allshare application.

Re: Devices can't see each other

      Hi Scubbie,

Thanks for your input so far.

The TV is connected to my router with an ethernet cable. It can access the internet (iPlayer, browsing etc.) with no issues.
I can control my TV with my phone over the network too using the Sony remote app.
I can confirm that the phone is definitely on the correct network.
I have also allowed streming on my network in WMP.

Neither the phone or the TV can see the laptop or vice versa, looks to be an issue with the laptop I'd say. I'll try the apps you suggested to confirm that the phone to TV connecttion is all good.

Re: Devices can't see each other

That's good, because you've narrowed down the source of the problem.

I would be inclined to examine the Network settings. For example ensure that you have setup the laptop to see the network as a Home Network. Also to ensure that you have enabled the folders to be shared. The following couple of links may help you to review your current settings:

This link may also help you to check the WMP 12 settings, as Tom mentioned above:

Thanks for the links, I'll see if there is anything I haven't tried. Also, those apps you recommended are great! Can't wait to get my laptop in the mix!

Re: Devices can't see each other

Ok, so after evn furthe investigation, I've found that while my laptop can ping the router ok, the router can't ping the laptop! Weird because I've disabled all firewalls.
