      Router keeps randomly losing connection

      Hi everyone,

Well lately I had the problem of the PSU faulting in my sagem router, so sky have sent me a new netgear one. However, this one seems to keep losing connection to the internet and its really annoying! Ive been on the phone to them but to be honest most of the people ive spoke to are useless and have no idea what my problem is.

I have it connected to the main pc downstairs and then 2 more pc's and my brothers ps3 is connected upstairs, and this set-up was fine when the old router was working. But now Ive installed this new router, the computers randomly get disconnected from the network and then i have to wait a few minutes and connect again, in a continuous cycle.

Does anyone know why its doing this? And is there any way i can fix it?

      Many thanks for any help.

Try changing the channel on the router. start at 13 and work down, some wireless routers work better stood on end also.

Changing the channel is what they suggested on the phone, I've tried channel 11 (default), channel 1, 7, and now its set at 6, and it's been the same problem every time. And it is stood on its end, but at the moment its stood on the floor rather than the desk, but i doubt this should make any difference?

Re: Router keeps randomly losing connection

It could affect the signal a lot, there is a reason that transmitters are places on very large masts, many things interfere with wireless which is why it is not a great way to connect any equipment that is static and could be easily connected by means of a wire or a homeplugs network.

One of the biggest problem with the Sky routers is a lack of an external aerial, this means that you cannot simply hook up another better aerial tht can be moved about to a better location.

Try channel 13, this is one of the least used channels and usually gives better connections.

Are you sure that the problem is due to the wireless reception? have you checked that it is not losing connection to the exchange? next time it does it, just check to see if the internet light is lit green and not orange.

Re: Router keeps randomly losing connection

Thanks for your help, ill try these things out.

I might be wrong but I think the router only has 11 channels, so ill switch it back to the highest if i can, and move it up onto the desk where the old router was sitting.

I think that sometimes the router just loses connection to the internet altogether but obviously sky won't admit this to me and blame it on loads of other things, but alot of the time the computer that the router is connected to can access the internet fine and its just the ones that are connected wirelessly lose connection to the router.

Re: Router keeps randomly losing connection

Just check the router logs, that will tell you if you have lost connection to the internet. It may also be worth posting you router stats so we can see.

There should be 13 channels on your router and as many only use 11, this is why starting at 13 is a good idea.

Download and run Inssider - inSSIDer Download | MetaGeek

It'll tell which are the least used channels in your immediate area.

Re: Router keeps randomly losing connection

I tried everything mentioned and everything the technicians on the phone told me to and none of it worked. So, I rang them once more and said if it didnt get sorted i wanted to cancel my package because im sick of being told to plug in cables over and over again, and they put me through to someone who spoke a bit more sense finally.

He did a test on the line and found that they were sending me alot higher speeds than my line can handle and this was probably making the router go wrong, and for the last half an hour its worked fine so fingers crossed it stays that way!

Thanks for all your help guys, appreciated.
