Any ideas why my speed is so ****?

Hmmm my speeds don't seem that great (5 connect package) - around 2Mb with downloads never going higher than 229k. Yet when I was with Eclipse I got over 600k a times.

My router reports that it's connected at 7040 kbps down with line attenuation of 26.0 db and noise margin of 9.1 db. I'm not that far from the exchange at 1.08 Km so I think I should be getting a lot better than 2Mb download speeds.

I did ring Sky tech Support and was told some rubbish about it being due to processes on my PC using up the bandwidth (eg the virus checker) which was a new one on me.

      Any ideas?

Sure. I'm connected by cat5 cable around 15m long as the router is downstairs plugged into the main telephone socket from outside (same as my old 3COM router used to be).

This is a copy of the statistics window from the router.

      System Up Time 115:08:53

Connection Speed 5568 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 26.0 db 13.5 db
Noise Margin 15.4 db 21.0 db

This is from speedtest.net which seems pretty accurate as I get a steady 220-229K when downloading files like the FM patch or Nvidia graphic card drivers.

According to SamKnows I'm 1.08Km from my exchange.

      Cheers

      erm this is kinda weird

I was getting a meg in 9 secs according to bandwidthplace.com/test

I ran the TCP thingy and changed settings, re-booted and got a meg in 3 secs, so for 4 hours I was over the moon, now everything has went to pot, very slow, did another test and got 25 secs for download from same site???

Have I been capped as I dowloaded a few things probably a good few hundred meg games demos etc. bue check out this from speed test?

Re: Any ideas why my speed is so ****?

Still only getting a 2Mb download speed even though router says I'm connected at 6Mb.

Phoned sky tech support but their two suggestions as to my poor download speed are A) other PC's connected to the router - even if they're off and B) backgrounmd processes like the virus checker hogging the bandwidth - both crap imo.

On my old Eclipse ADSL max up to 8Mb connection I could get 6Mb+ download speeds and have a screen shot to prove it.

I've tried the TCP/IP optimiser, and my router is connected directly into the master socket in the hall, with my PC connected to it by around 20m of cat5 ethernet cable (which should be fine as up to 100m is ok)..
