Switched to sky from NTL
Hi All,
I am finding your site very informative.
Am I getting the max speed possible or is there something I could do. I am connected on Sky MAX and am disappointed that I am not getting better speeds than NTL. I have plugged my modem into the test socket and here are the stats:

Re: Switched to sky from NTL
You got fantastic speeds with cable because basically that technology isn't constrained by line length.
The long and short of it is that you will never, ever get speeds as good as you got with NTL (assuming you were on 10Mb) on ADSL. You're at the limit of your line I'm afriad to say.

Re: Switched to sky from NTL
Hi Chris,
I have also swapped from NTL to Sky. Can I ask you if Sky recommended you to the Max package? I asked them to test my line to see what I could get, I was told that I could have the max package.
Suffice to say 3 weeks later my router only reports 6.2mb AT MOST and that is with a line attenutaion of 51db. As yours is over 60db I assume you will get less than me as it suggests you are further away from the exchange.
I have called Sky and asked them what my line test showed when I ordered Sky, they told me 3.5mb. I asked WHY was I told that I could get the Max package then and they said, "Well it was available in your area". I argued that I would NEVER get even close to 8mb never mind 16mb.
In the end they would not reduce my package and said that I would have to wait 12 months. As they would not reduce my payments from £10 to £5 I asked them to cancel my movies which saved me £6.50 and they said okay. You've got to be impressed by their business acumen, they let me reduce my bill by £6.50 instead of reducing it by £5.

Re: Switched to sky from NTL
Hi Wayne
I did not ask them, I just assumed that I would get a beeter speed and connected to the MAX package through the internet. I am disapposinted that the speed is so low, but I can kind of live with it.
I rang Sky explaining my disappointment and explained that as it was close to NTL (fitted the ADSL Nation box today, and speed has gone up to 3.7Mb) and asked them to swap me onto the £5.00 per month option the response I got was; No problem, it will take 24hrs.
I was connected at 4Mb with NTL so the speed difference is not a massive problem, although being limited to 40Gb I thought might be. I then thought about it and decided that I dont download more than 1Gb per day so it should be oky.
When I first rang Sky the other day (And got transfered to another dept. for over 30 mins, which I didnt want to do, so hung up) I asked the guy whether it is possible to swap, He said; You can change at any time within your contract providing that you have a "tackticle" reason for changing, As I was not getting the speed expected then it shouldnt be a issue (although, I never expected to get the full 16Mb).
I hope you get it sorted as I have.
Chris
