Good Sync Speed, Poor Download Speed

Just got connected to the Sky connect package. Router took its time arriving other than that managed to setup my connection no problem. Thanks to this website managed to add new email address, configure outlook express and change the encryption on the router to WEP to enable use of my existing PC card. Donít know were Iíd have been without the help.

Anyway, based on various broadband speed checkers, was expecting up to 6 MB/s for my line, so was pleasantly surprised to be syncing at 7 MB/s. See router stats below:

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 5563 6748 0 1049 5951 00:20:57
      LAN 10M/100M 848 0 0 59 0 00:21:15
      WLAN 11M/54M 7966 6135 0 6248 1162 00:21:06

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7200 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 15.5 db 14.0 db
Noise Margin 5.6 db 20.0 db

Despite syncing at 7MB/s, all the speed test sites are showing download speeds of around 2 MB/s regardless of whether Iím connected via Ethernet or wireless. Any ideas how to improve the speed?

Have you tried connecting to master socket to see if you can improve you noise margin.

Link for testing the master socket is on the right-hand side of this page.

Re: Good Sync Speed, Poor Download Speed

I don't actually have a master socket in the house. Old house, dodgy wiring. However I tried unpluging the phones from all extensions and plugging router direcly into main outlet. Both speed and noise unaffected. Aslo tried running TCP optimser. No difference there either. Could it be although I'm syncing at nearly 8 MB/s, that sky still have me on a 2 MB/s rate? If I was on a 2 MB/s pacage would the sync rate be around 2 MB/s or would it still show around 8 MB/s.
