      Low Connection Speed

I recently signed up for the sky mid broadband package. I have connected up the router for the first time today having had our line connected some 2 weeks ago.

At the moment we are getting about a 1.8mb downstream and 400kb upstream on both the wireless and the wired.

From what I have seen on the forums lots of people are having similar problems. I did try to upload my router stats but the link on another thread did not work.

We have been informed that our line is capable of about 6mb.

I am receiving only about 43db line stream attenuation on the downstream and we are between 1-2km from our local exchange.

Can anybody give me a clue as to why I am not receiving anywhere close to the correct speed?

      Cheers,
      Chris.

      Hi ChrissyPea
Have you tried turning off the 'use router as DHCP server' option off and use a fixed IP address?
I found this worked for me.

      Re: Low Connection Speed

I have the MAX and my connection details are:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7274 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 44.0 db 26.2 db
Noise Margin 6.8 db 12.5 db

Is this fast enough? I realise it is up to 16mb but then the Midi at 5 is up to 8mb!

      Thanks for any replies.

If as you say you have read a number of posts on the forum you have somehow missed the (several) hundred discussing or explaining low connection speeds

It is almost certainly because of noise on your line.

Have a look at the first sticky in my signature at the bottom of this post. Then have a look at the cabling and faceplate help forum.

PS Your attenuation will allow a potential connection speed of up to 9000kbps.

      @wearside

      Welcome to the forum

You also have a potential connection speed approaching 9000kbps. Can I suggest you read the links suggested above too if you would like to see this speed?

However, if you don't need "unlimited" and the slightly higher upstream then you'd be better off by 5 a month on Mid.

      Re: Low Connection Speed

Your connection speed is a little low for your attenuation but not all that bad.

However, your noise margin is too low and that's probably the reason for your disconnection problems.

Are you still in your initial 10 day training period? If so then your line should train down to a stable connection. If not (and in any case you should do this) you need to improve your line quality e.g. don't connect via an extension etc. See the cabling and faceplate help forum for more details.

PS Please change your profile details as they say you are on Base but in this post you say you are on Connect.

      Re: Low Connection Speed

I am sure you are unhappy, and with good cause, but you are also a little confused about what is going on with your connection.

You say you are only getting 300kbps but that must be your download speed as your router is connecting at 4256kbps. There are many reasons for a lower download speed than connection speed - none of them are any responsibility of Sky's.

Your router reports a connection of 4256kbps which is very low for an attenuation of 34db. Here there's pretty much only one cause, noise, and that also is nothing to do with Sky.

Can I politely suggest you abandon your call(s) to Sky and sort the problem out yourself? You will find a great many posts on this forum which cover exactly the problem you have - start at the cabling and faceplate help forum. You may also find the two stickies in my signature at the bottom of this post helpful.

If you get stuck, post back.
