      Suspect I'm capped, any advice?

      Hi,

I was activated with the Max package on tuesday (13/02/07). After reading some of the other posts I suspect that my downstream connection is being capped at 8meg.

Could someone have a look at my router stats below and tell me if I should expect a faster connection? My understanding is that as my mode is set to G.DMT it will never be able to go faster than 8meg unless I'm switched to ADSL2+? According to samknows my exchange (Watford) has this capability.

I also contacted Sky and they told me that I should expect the speed to be increased 3 days after activation. This seems quite strange I would have thought you are either activated or your not?

Also I'm not sure how to interpret the stats in terms of line errors. Could someone explain what figures I should be looking at? I couldn't spot any information on this in any of the other posts.

      Thanks

Re: Suspect I'm capped, any advice?

      Welcome to the forum

Yes, you are on Sky G.DMT not ADSL2+. This actually limits you to a theoretical 12000kbps though in practice somewhere around 9500kbps is the maximum so far reported on this forum.

Sky apparently put customers on G.DMT when their line shows evidence of being problematical as they believe that this mode is better able to cope with line errors. In some/many cases they also cap the speed which has the effect of further boosting the noise margin and hence the signal quality.

That's the official line. However, there certainly appear to be cases where the rationale for using G.DMT with some customers doesn't stack up.

Your stats show that your line is certainly generating errors even on G.DMT and capped to 8096. Interestingly, they are at the threshold of what I would consider to be moving from acceptable to high. Were you on ADSL2+ and uncapped I suspect you would experience some problems though I doubt they would be appalling.

These line errors are very probably caused by noise on your line arising from your internal phone wiring. Extensions are often the main cause.

My advice is to test your connection via the test socket which you will find behind the faceplate of your master socket (assuming you have an NTE5). Reboot the router then plug it directly into the test socket and use it for at least a couple of hours then take the stats again.

If you see an improvement to your noise margin and error levels then you can safely assume that fitting a replacement filtered faceplate will improve matters and it should be possible to get your cap lifted.

On ADSL2+ with your attenuation you could expect a connection of up to 16000kbps.

Re: Suspect I'm capped, any advice?

Hi Saturday, thanks for the reply

Below are my stats when connected to the test socket. The errors look pretty low to me so I've ordered a new faceplate from ADSL nation (despatched a couple of hours after ordering, now that's service for you!).

Can you just take a quick look at my stats and let me know what you think? If the filtered faceplate does the job then it looks like my battle with tier 1 can begin.....

Well even though your connection was only up for 92 minutes, in that time there's not a single error (apart from some superframe errors which I suspect are linked to your UAS errors which were probably as your router was booting) so I'd say a replacement filtered faceplate would be a very good investment. As I predicted your noise margin leapt up with the test socket.

      I reckon you'll be reporting a 16meg connection soon

Re: Suspect I'm capped, any advice?

      Hi Again Saturday,

I fitted a new XTE-2005 faceplate from ADSL nation last night, stats are below. I'm concerned that it doesn't seem to be now connecting at the capped rate (although I rebooted again this morning and it has connected it 8032) also my attenuation has jumped up somewhat.
Can you take a look at my errors and tell me if they've improved with the new faceplate?
Do you think if I got moved to ADSL2+ I would see a speed increase now?

Is it possible I've connected the faceplate up badly?

      Any advice is much appreciated

Re: Suspect I'm capped, any advice?

I'm not really sure why your speed has dropped a little with the faceplate and that coupled with your attenuation jumping up makes me wonder.

There's not really much you can do wrong when fitting a faceplate, however I think you should double check your connections and probably remake them. For the attenuation to jump from 30db to 35db certainly suggests that some extra "load" has been added. Before you do anything else, reboot the router to make sure it's not a simple glitch in the router reporting. Assuming it is not, to work out what's going on, first off, try temporarily removing all connected devices (phone, digibox etc) to exclude the possibility of a faulty device. When you have excluded them, try disconnecting each hardwired extension from the faceplate and see if it is one of them that's causing this. Sorry - clutching at straws here but it's difficult to diagnose these problems remotely.

In any event your new stats show you have no appreciable line errors with the faceplate fitted.

Moving to ADSL2+ should bring a significant improvement to your connection speed.
