try pluging the router into the test socket & post the stats with it in there

Odd - I just restarted my router and the speed went up a bit to 3450 kb/sec.

In reply - I honestly can't find my test socket anywhere. It must be hidden behind some unit or something, my house is fairly new, but if I do come across it I'll post the stats with it in there.

There is room for improvement in your speed, but you will need to find your master socket and plug into the test socket to find out if an extension cable is slowing your speed down. If you find an orange wire connected in terminal 3 in your socket disconnect it so only terminals 2 and 5 have wires connected

Re: Not sure if this is the fastest I can get. Can anyone advise?

I tried it in the test socket and my speed was 4.9Mbit. I know the port in my room (which i usually use) has an extension cable fitted for it, so this is probably the cause of the problem.

You recommended to disconnect the orange wire to terminal 3. What does this do? Will it cause problems?

      Thanks!

The orange wire is the bell/ring wire which is not needed. It was implemented many years ago and is now not used. There will be no problems when this is disconnected. I am guessing you will see an improvement in your stats.

Wow. Am I imagining this? Disconnecting that orange wire boosted me from 3.1 Mb/sec to 4.4 Mb/Sec!!
Thanks a lot. No idea how that worked, but thanks! Hope this speed holds.

Re: Not sure if this is the fastest I can get. Can anyone advise?

The ring wire can pick up noise from radio signals and so make your connection worse. It used to be used for pulse dialing, which has now been replaced by tone dialing and so is often not needed.
