Re: phone extension question
Hi again, Saturday,
I've now installed the ADSL nation faceplate and the wireless USB from Sky and my stats are now brilliant:
and
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4768 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.0 db 29.0 db
Noise Margin 5.9 db 20.0 db
I think I may have cracked it
With all the other tweaks I've done, do you think I'm getting the best from my connection - or is there more I could do? I'm getting greedy now
Thanks once again for your earlier help - brilliant site

Re: phone extension question
4786kbps isn't too bad for an attenuation of 50db on Connect.
Assuming your router is plugged directly into it and not via an extension, by fitting the new faceplate you've already done the thing that is most likely to make a difference to your connection speed.
Download speed is a different matter. The speed test you show indicates a download speed of not much more than 50% of the connection speed. You should be getting ~85%.
There are 3 likely reasons for this shortfall (one or more may apply):
- the speedtest server was overloaded
- your PC isn't set up properly
- your wireless connection is a bit poor
For the first try this server. For the second see the second sticky in my signature (which I think you may have already done). For the third try experimenting with different wireless channels and/or router positions.
Glad to see you're basically sorted now thoughLast edited by Saturday; 31-01-07 at 07:45 PM.

Re: phone extension question
Hi there Saturday,
Thanks for your patience - I've looked at your posts for the past 6 weeks and I've taken the advice noted:
ADSL Nation faceplate: installed;
router: now wireless, extension lead eliminated - signal at maximum
MTU and router at 1500
now my stats are:
Namesco BroadbandMax Bandwidth speedtest | Test your ADSL connection speed
and
router stats
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5504 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 46.0 db 26.0 db
Noise Margin 9.1 db 23.0 db
I've got a new professional RJ11 ordered (it was cheap!) - my connection is solid, am I wrong to expect more? If not, any more tweaks? I'm happy to use any links/stickys that I've missed so far. My upstream stats seem poor.
thanks

Re: phone extension question
Your router stats look healthy (good noise margin, slightly low downstream - your current attenuation could support ~6500kbps). Upstream connection is good, "connection is solid" is good
Your speedtest results aren't so good. Your download speed should be up to 4500kbps. There are several reasons why you are seeing this shortfall, as I said in a previous post. In order of likelihood:
- your wireless connection isn't good enough ("signal at max" doesn't really mean too much as that's probably just the signal rate). What speed do you get wired?
- you need to optimise your TCP/IP settings (which I think you've done)
- you are on Connect!
For the first, experiment with channel numbers and router/aerial position. For the second, see the second sticky in my signature. For the last, hope Sky LLU your exchange soon.
One thing I do find puzzling though is just how much your attenuation has dropped. When you first posted it was 61db. You fitted a faceplate and it dropped to 50db. Now you say it is 46db
Fitting a filtered faceplate will reduce attenuation but usually only by a couple of db at most - yours dropped 11! It then went on to drop another 4db. That's very strange and it makes me wonder if your router is struggling to measure the attenuation properly for some reason or this is an effect of Connect re-profiling your line?
Nothing to worry about but odd/interesting nevertheless.Last edited by Saturday; 03-02-07 at 09:04 AM.
