why am I only getting 30k max..help me

      Hi to all,

I live in the Docklands area, and my closest exchange is Poplar. I just have been connected since 23/01/07. Unfortunately sky could only provide the 'CONNECT' package at 17/month stating that they do not have enough slots for me to have the max or mid package . I got the internet connected ok, adsl filter etc hooked ok..blah blah...I was getting about 300k-400k per second. I thought I should be getting more than that, as it was meant to be an 8mbit line, I listened to the line carefully and noticed some hiss, and crackles so I called BT and told them and they immediately came round and said the master socket was incorrectly wired. BT rewired the master socket and I thought everything would be better, but when I reset the router I did a zillion speed tests and guess what my upload speed turned out to be faster than my download speed. WTF!!! my upload speed was about 50k-64k per second and my download speed about 30k-32k per second...Now I am totally ****** off (I have my line stats at the bottom). I called up sky and told them about my connection speed and I am waiting to here from level 2 within 48hrs. I hope the sort this out. Also can someone tell me if those line stats are any good and what I should be achieving. Also the BT engineer did mention that now the master socket is being filtered as it was not before. Some one please help me out, what should I do. I dont want to this to escalate too long as I believe I am in the grace period and if this takes longer than that I cant cancel this broadband line etc..

Please fire any questions but please give me some advice etc...

      Thanks
      Bish.

      BTW. great site.

How long have you been connected?

Connect uses an exchange based rate adaption method. For the first 10 days or so the exchange experiments to find the optimum stable speed for your line. During this period speeds can vary enormously.

I have been connected since 21/01/07 (as I noticed adsl light lit up), but officially my line activation starts from 23/01/07.

You will have 10 days of unsteadiness like Saturday says, try and bear with it as this determines the best speed that your line can deliver.

Ok, i'll bear with this for about 10 days. What if (hyperthetically) my line still remains no greater then a mere 10k per second, and sky cannot do anything. I will be in limbo as I have gone passed the 8 days of cooling off (grace period) and cannot escape the clutches of sky...Or does this 10 day line rate adaption not apply with the cooling off period?

If you are that concerned, try ringing them on the freephone number and ask them to extend it to 10 days.

I am sure they would not have a problem with this, and it would help allay your own fears. Just explain clearly your concerns and that you would like to make an informed decision when you have all the facts. Make sure if you do call you get them to record the longer peiod (if any) and get a name.

      Good luck

Re: why am I only getting 30k max..help me

      biswasb - although I can't help I can sympathize.

My Connect package started around the 27th Dec - so now well outside of the 10 day period. After some initial problems, in the second full week, all appeared to have settled down. Connection of between 4.5M & 6M - giving me a very steady 3.7 - 3.8M. Then a couple of weeks ago, regardless of the connection speed, my download speed dropped to 100 - 200k. I tried pretty well all of the suggestions in here, but no improvement unfortunately. I contacted SKY and they suggested the micro filters - remove all other equipment etc. At this point, I became aware that my telephone line was physically very noisy - a lot of crackling (this was the weekend after the storms and our cables are underground), so I have reported this to BT. Engineer is allocated for tomorrow! I decided to let BT do there thing before getting back to SKY, although i can understand that a noisy line will not help I was not totally convinced that this was the 'real' problem. Something which I am even more sure of now - as yesterday we were back to 4+M download!! even with an appalling 'phone line. Sadly all too short lived, as tonight I have been connected between 3.2M & a little over 5M, but the ol' download is back to 113k (last test)!

This simply isn't good enough and despite line issues - how can it be over 4M one day and 113k the next?

      Confused of Lytham!

As said before, Connect uses an exchange based rate adaption method which can leap all over the place if the line conditions are fluctuating.

Re: why am I only getting 30k max..help me

I just tested my line speed today and amazingly (well not that amazing, just a wee bit) my line speed is between 25k and 120k per second. Your right NewsreadeR, the exchange is doing some crappy based rate crappy adaption nonesense. I hope it improves as this is definately not worth 17/month. Sky could at least reduce the cost to 5/month. I used to live in Poplar and I used to get a solid 900k per second with Bulldog on their 8mb package, and now I am bearly getting 1mbit..This better improve.....oh god please help us CONNECT users for we have not sin'ed.

Re: why am I only getting 30k max..help me

Ok I can except that there will be fluctuations, but as such I would expect in the main that these fluctuations would be a variance i.e. if you were getting on average 2.5M it would be fluctuating between say 2 & 3M or maybe when things are not going too well dropping down to say 1M. Also if this is simply 'conditions' working against me, surely I should be getting some decent speeds every so often - not just one day in the last 10 or so. In fact I have had about 5 days in the month of reasonable download speeds, the rest have been appalling.

Taking your point that speeds may vary given other traffic etc, I can understand my connection going lower at peak times - but again, I sometimes get a connection speed of in excess of 6M and then dropping down to 800 and odd K. This again seems a huge difference. Also I don't understand the correlation (or lack of it) when I can get a decent connection, but a lousy download speed. I.e. connecting at over 5M and having (albeit too briefly) a download of 3.7M - but mostly getting between 100 to 200K with a similar or the same connection speed. My noise ratio seems to be fairly steady (even if the physical noise if awful - BT tomorrow ) in the region of 10 to 15db - so again I don't see why such a variation in the download speeds. Sorry if I am misunderstanding something here, but what I have read could explain some results under certain circumstances - I can accept that at odd times speeds could drop due to too much traffic etc., but this is happening the majority of the time, only seeing brief decent results - which simply proves such results are indeed attainable.

      Cheers,

      and thanks for your help!
