Can you check my speed please!!!

      Hi,

I've fnally now been connected to Sky Broadband. Statistics from within my router are showing the following:

      System Up Time 03:08:34
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 72808 104744 0 2938 122052 00:20:37
      LAN 10M/100M 240327 167922 0 29395 1411 03:08:32
      WLAN 11M/54M 181862 102610 0 21531 559 03:08:22

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8096 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 38.0 db 25.0 db
Noise Margin 9.1 db 14.0 db

What does this all mean? I was previously with orange broadband (but capped at 2mb) how fast is my line now then? - I understand my exchange can handle up to 5mb (I'm about a mile as the crow flies from the exchange).

I've also checked Sky Netgear DG834GT utility version 0.4 - and the 'Mode' is showing as 'G.DMT' - does this mean that my connection is being capped? - if so how do I get it 'uncapped'.

Yes you've been capped. G.DMT limits you to a connection speed of ~8000kbps.

If you were on ADSL2+ with a relatively noise free line, with your attenuation you could expect a connection speed of ~12000kbps, considerably more than 5Mb.

You will have to ask Sky why you are on G.DMT. Expect a nonsense answer unless you get through to Tier 3. If you pre arm yourself with your line error figures that may help.

      thanks for you reply.

Can you confirm someting for me please. Are all BT exchanges ADSL2 enabled? My exchange is Newbury, Berkshire.

I've tried speaking to sky. Tier 1 useless and tier 2 told me that ADSL2 not yet available at my exchange.

You mention about 'pre arm yourself with your line error figures that may help' - where do I go to find the 'line error figures' in order to arm myself?

If ADSL2 is available at my exchange, why are Sky not 'hooking me up' to that straight away, instead of capping me?

Re: Can you check my speed please!!!

You might be getting a little confused.

BT own all the exchanges. Under recent legislative changes they have to allow other operators access to their exchanges to fit their own equipment (subject to space availability). This is known as Local Loop Unbundling (LLU).

Sky have a presence in a large number of BT exchanges but not all by a long way. Where they are in BT exchanges they are fitting ADSL2+ equipment. In these instances, assuming Sky haven't allocated all their equipment, customers will be put on Base, Mid or Max, Where they have either used their capacity or are not in an exchange Sky offer Connect which is a rebadged BT service.

There are a number of reasons why Sky put people on what the router reports as G.DMT. Without going into a lot of hypothetical discussion, Sky G.DMT is probably not ADSL1. It may be capped ADSL2 or capped ADSL2+. Why Sky have put you on this capped service only they know - for instance there is a rumour that they have misordered and fitted a number of exchange cards that are incompatible with ADSL2+. Maybe yours is one of the affected exchanges - who knows. Maybe they think there is a problem with your line and capping it will help. The reasons given range from the ridiculous (Tier 1) to the possible (Tier 2) to Tier 3 generally knowing what's really going on. Only Tier 3 can switch you to ADSL2+ if it is possible to.

You can get extended router stats by using Mognut's utility. If you need help in using the utility or interpreting the stats, ask.
