      Speed issues

      Re this post: http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/cabli...faceplate.html

      Something strange is now happening.

Connection Speed 2944 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 45.0 db 25.5 db
Noise Margin 13.6 db 21.0 db

300KB/Sec should now be possible, however my actual transfer rate is only 15KB/sec any reason why?

Also, it makes no difference to the speed if I plug it directly into the test port on the master socket, infact my downstream goes up to approximately 6000kbps but my download speed remains at 16KB/sec.

      Any ideas?

      Thanks, Chris.

      Re: Speed issues

used mossywells utility and reset the router, simple eh?

I was resetting it before via the pen in the hole trick but obviously I was doing something wrong.

I do have a seperate question however still on topic...

I am playing with mognuts utility as we speak as my dB is around 15 normally, as I begin to lower it my downstream (showing in the router status) gets faster, I have gradually lowered it more and more, if set the target noise margin to 1 unit (bearing in mind 16 units = 1dB) my connection jumps on the downstream anyway to 3500kbps a whole 1000mbps better than before...

      My new stats are:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3584 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 44.0 db 25.0 db
Noise Margin 8.9 db 21.0 db

What doesn't change however is the ACTUAL download speed, infact I find that I am now getting inconsistent results, some sites say 240KB/sec, 1 said 130-150KB/Sec and downloading several files indicates anywhere between 100-170 as a general rule, infact I am sure it was slightly faster before...

Any ideas, have I pushed the noise dB too low (I see that mossywells "example config" file has 120 units set as the standard SNR setting, whereas mine is 1 !!!)

      Thanks, Chris.

      Re: Speed issues

Just had a thought, do I need to phone Sky ( not at this time ) and ask them to increase my line speed? obviously when they have done checks before the max I was able to receive was 2500kbps, after much fettling this evening I am on the verge of cracking the magical 4000kbps and think that with the ADSL Nation Faceplate correctly attached tomorrow I should see anything up to 5000kbps (this was origonally indicated plugged directly into the test port on the master socket).

      EDIT

      Does this help?

/usr/sbin/adslctl: ADSL driver and PHY status

      Re: Speed issues

Could do but the way the forum software works (I believe) is that the posts would merge in chronological and time order and that would make very confusing reading while the poster is trying to get help.

      Re: Speed issues

Only reason why I suggested that as it keeps all the relvant info together, So if another user is referred to this thread all info is there.

      Re: Speed issues

Thanks for the reply, so I should just accept that my line simply isn't capable of 4000kbps and up the dB back to standard, in effect reducing me to 3000kbps.

Interestingly enough, when I do this it is still no slower or quicker.
