      worth badgering sky for more speed, base on these stats?

      Just got connected yesterday, moving from an upto 8meg connection. Just for the record, i had a bt voyager 205 modem, which gave a line reading of att: 35db, and more recently a Belkin which gave att: 31fb. Weird how these devices report different results. Anyway, here are my current stats with sky max.

      Thats as low as the SNR gets (evening), and during the day it is around 12db, and the sync speed is the same whatever time of day. Speed tests (and a few downloads) indicate i can max out the connection under ideal circumstances. Do you think its worth pursuing sky for more speed? (adsl2).

      thanks

      Re: worth badgering sky for more speed, base on these stats?

      I've got similar stats after rewiring my internals and was wondering the same thing

      Router sync: 8096Kb/s
      Line Attenuation: 41db
      SNR: 8db

      It looks like I'm on ADSL, but how do I know for sure? Looking at the ADSL2/Attenuation graphs theoretically it looks like I could get a small percentage increase, but was wondering if upgrading to ADSL2 could do more harm than good if you're on the cusp like me.

      I'm currently on the Max package, so if 8Mb/s is my limit I guess I should come down to the Mid package and save myself a fiver

      @joe pineaples

      For some reason you've been capped by Sky - there's no apparent reason in your stats.

      Were you on ADSL2+ with your current attenuation you could expect a connection speed of up to 11750kbps.

      @cazzbar

      With your nice neat downstream figure of 8096 it looks like you have been too (full stats would verify this).

      Were you on ADSL2+ with your current attenuation you could expect a connection speed of up to 11000kbps.

      Re: worth badgering sky for more speed, base on these stats?

      Thanks Saturday, I'll post my full stats when I get home. Yeah before I rewired internally my sync speed was a lot less and quite random, now I'm consistently sync'ing at 8096 which made me think I'm at the next stage of pushing those figures up.

      Cheers

      Re: worth badgering sky for more speed, base on these stats?

      Just tried doing a forced sync on both ADSL2 and ADSL2+. Now i need to get this right - the light that flashes orange for a few seconds, then green, means that it is sync'd with the line? (no instructions with my router). If os, then this is what happened with both the above. BUT, when i tried, i couldnt get any webpages up. I tried switching the router off/on, and still the same thing. Set it back to GDMT, and it was still the same with the webpages. I was brickin myself by this time (wishing i'd left well alone). Powered everything down, and also had to a do a repair network connection (maybe this was the problem - i didnt take much notce), but now its all ok again, albiet at the capped setting.

      So just wondering based on the above, if its worth trying a forced sync again - has anyone else tried this and was successful?.

      If the exchange is forcing a G.DMT connection then it is unlikely you can force a different mode with the router.

      Re: worth badgering sky for more speed, base on these stats?

      My stats are very similar to both you guys. On reading through this superb forum daily it seems that more and more people are being capped on ADSL1.

      My noise figure is largely to blame. It can go as high as 11.0db to as low as 5.6db at around 6pm and thats where I start getting problems, pages taking ages to display etc.

      If my SNR was stable at around the 11db mark then I would certainly expect a much higher connection speed. I rebooted last night when my SNR was at about 5.8db and got a connection of 7360, I've left it there as this gives me a constant stable line.

      I'm sure if I was on ADSL2+ I could manage a stable 9000-10000 after an evening reboot.

      I think sky are just playing it safe as the majority of users have no clue about rebooting a router and the benefits. The lower the connection speed the less chance of sky support receiving calls.

      Also I've never managed a succesful force to ADSL2 either.

      Re: worth badgering sky for more speed, base on these stats?

      If you're getting a 5.4db swing in noise margin then improvements to your connection filtering (assuming you haven't done this already) should give you both a higher baseline and a reduced swing.

      On a relatively noise free line you could expect a stable connection speed of ~11000kbps with your attenuation.

      Hi Saturday, this is my stat window as promised... just wondering if this will tell you if I've been capped on ADSL(1), or whether you need more info. I can't seem to find all the stats "joe pineapples" posted!

      Cheers

      No, sorry, the full stats have to be extracted from the router using a non standard method (if you can be bothered).

      The easiest way would be to use Mognut's utility which you will find discussed in the Tech forum sticky and find here.
