Just plugged in and my speed :(

      Hi Guys..

I've been reading the pages a while now in anticipation for my sky max broadband..

Just plugged in the box and done a speed test:

      My stats are:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4608 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 43.0 db 27.0 db
Noise Margin 7.8 db 13.0 db

      Any advice?

      Many thanks!!

      Jamie

Do you know how far from the exchange you are?

You could also try rebooting your router at different times of the day

      @jimmy2bob

With your attenuation you have a potential connection speed of ~95000kbps.

To see how close to this you might be able to get, connect your router directly to the test socket which you'll find behind the faceplate of your master socket (assuming it's a NTE5). If you get a significantly better connection speed then this shows that the internal wiring (i.e. extensions) are introducing unwanted noise. This can normally be removed by use of a replacement filtered faceplate.

You may find this useful background reading. You will find advice re faceplates in the cabling and faceplate help forum.

Lastly, speedtest results are only as good as the server hosting them - in effect you are simply measuring server load. Also, the speed your router connects at is not the same as the speed you can expect from downloads due to transmission overheads. Typically you should expect downloads to be at approx 85% of the connection speed.

If you find that your downloads are significantly lower than 85% from speedtest servers that are lightly loaded, then consider making changes to your TCP/IP settings. TCPOptimizer is a simple tool for this purpose and you will find details here.

Note that most of the info I have given here is in the stickies just above your post

      @jewkesy

Distance from the exchange (line length) can be approximated from the attenuation. In jimmy2bob's case he is approximately a little over 3km away.

I'm not at all sure why you suggested rebooting the router at different times of day

      Many thanks for your responces!

I am 1.33km away from my exchange (as the crow flys)

I will try plugging the router direct into the main socket in the morning and report back!

      thanks again

Re: Just plugged in and my speed :(

      Hi Guys..

Finally got round to taking my radiator cover off the wall to get to my master socket! Here are my results :

      Plugged into master

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6400 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 43.0 db 27.0 db
Noise Margin 6.8 db 13.0 db

      Normal

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4704 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 43.0 db 27.0 db
Noise Margin 7.5 db 12.0 db

As you can see, a massive difference, but still not amazing like was prommised... any ideas? get sky to come out?

      Thanks for your help

      Jamie

Re: Just plugged in and my speed :(

Well, with a relatively noise free line on ADSL2+ you could in theory get a maximum connection speed of something like ~9500kbps.

You've tried your test socket so any line noise remaining is likely to be happening between you and the exchange. Your router can tell you what ADSL mode you're on (see tech forum sticky).

The speed is probably there if you are prepared to go for it. How bad do you want it?
