      Speed seems slow

Hi my line went active today and I have the max package. I am using wireless as the router is downstairs (no one else uses it apart from me) and the download speeds are terrible. Max speed I am getting is about 50k/s. On BT I was getting 300k/s.

Checked my router status and all seems fine:

      Connection speed: 14164 kbps
      Line Atten: 34.0db
      Noise Margin: 6.9db

No sure what to do really? Contacted sky technical team, but they are no help as it's just a call center with people following instructions off a screen.

Maybe it's worth shifting my PC downstairs and plugging it directly into the router, to see if it improves it?

Just can't work out how going from a 4mb connection to a 16mb would make the download speeds a lot slower.

I know exactly what you mean mate. I've had Sky Broadband Max for a few weeks now and my stats are:

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 1555506 1488129 0 1071 2307 72:10:10
      LAN 10M/100M 1189776 1660921 0 1735 1207 72:11:00
      WLAN 11M/54M 204425 182661 0 687 79 72:10:50

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1408 kbps 576 kbps
Line Attenuation 15.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 6.8 db 7.0 db

Yes, 1408kbps!! I was really looking forward to super fast broadband. If anyone can point us in the right direction of solving this then it would be greatly appreciated.

      1) Try a different channel for the wireless router

If you can plug the pc straight into the router, I am positive you will see an improvement.

Other things to try - move the aeriel to try to give a better signal, updated drivers for the wireless adapter from the manufacturers website.

Try it in the test socket then post your stats back.

Changed the channel and it is not download at around 500k.

Managed to get 1.24mb on one site.

My only problem now is games. Counterstrike is pinging to servers at 60/70

You will have to try the combination of channels and aeriel I think.

If not can you run an RJ45 cable from the router to the PC?

      Im having the smae problem.
Every single speed test says im running about 600kbs. Not 16mbs. But my router menu says 36-54mbps.
Now it seems MUCH faster than my old 2mb connection, and bit-comet is 5-6 times as fast.
      This is really confusing

16mb doesn't mean you will download at 16mb.

You could hit about 1.40mb/s max if you had the full 16.

I'm just confused as it's just off and on.

My best channel seems to be 9. Download speeds seem to be ok now anywhere between 700-1mb. Just pings in games are terrible.

yeah i get that, but what confuses me is that with my 2mb ntl connection, the test showed 2mb, yet with the 16mb it shows 600kb
