help needed for the worlds biggest technophobe

      Hi guys and gals

I've just been activated (albeit without being notified) having purchased the Max package. I've no idea what speeds I am getting, nor what I should expect, however the speeds seem slow compared to the 8mb connection I had a year ago with UKonline.

Could someone please provide me with an idiots guide to finding my speeds? When I get home tonight I will post my findings. i have seen people post their "stats?" on here in the past, but I have no idea how to interprete them, so without wanting to push my luck i'd be extremely grateful if someone could do this for me too please

      cheers!!!!

Also post your stats here so we can estimate the speed you may be able to achieve?

The following things will effect your speeds?

      * The distance from your local exchange, Which in your case is Forest Hill!
The less distance the lower the attenuation in return a faster speed!

*The main factor, Line Quality! Because of BT's current infastructure being old! Speeds are limited for peoples whos original copper cable cant support fast speeds?

im You are approximately 611 metres from the exchange (straight line distance).

Thats STRAIGHT LINE, So in actual theory, The line will not always take the fastest route!

So mine is 611metres straight and im sure its 1.3km actual?

Your router is connected at 10545 kbps (10meg or thereabouts).

You should be able to download at up to 8meg with this connection:

      Try here:

      http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

Your downstream attenuation is good at 33db and potentially you could expect to connect at ~15000kbps. An easy test would be to connect your router to your mastersocket test socket and see if the downstream connection speed improves. If it does then you would probably benefit from fitting a filtered NTE5 replacement faceplate (DIY <15).

Have a look at this subforum for more info:
