Slow speeds only on usenet (giganews)??

      Hi

Finally got Sky Broadband installed this week, and the connection speeds when tested with various tests are about 6.5meg, which is about right for a suggested 8meg connection. (this is the only speed option I was offered). However when trying to download on usenet (giganews) using newsbin pro the best speeds I get are about 0.75meg, more often around 0.5meg. When I use the giganews diagnostic tool is mentions "firewall or filter?" as a possible reason for slow speed. I have disabled my firewall (which is the same as the one I used on aol with speeds of 7meg) and it is still the same??

      Anyone have any ideas please??

      Thanks
      Chris

Can Sky have set something up to limit the speeds of usenet downloads without affecting the speed of other downloads??

it's called traffic shaping, but they dont appear to be doing it.

      I just downloaded a file from buzzardnews (400mb) at a steady(ish) 7mbit.

It could be giganews themselves or one of the links to the region where their servers are. I'd be more than happy to recommend and refer you to buzzard

Hi - I am also experiencing seriously slow speeds with Usenext. I used to have a 2meg BT connection and usenext would download at full speed on this. No idea why.

      Same here

I have an 8Mbps connection althought there are speeds poblems with it. However I used to download at a steady 4Mbps on Usenet with BT connection. Since changing to Sky I am in the low 300Kbps.

I thought at first that thre might be some problems at Usernet as when i used to get slow speeds on BT it was because there were server probs at Usente. However they report Green on all servers.

Hi, Ive been using newshosting and I use grabit to as the dl client and Ive been seeing a steady speed of around 750KB/s which literally means that Im able to max out my 8MB connection (I should be on max and a higher connection but that issue is being sorted out with sky at the moment!).

Im not sure, but perhaps it may be the client that your using to dl that is causing a conflict with some firewall etc, ive used giganews etc in the past however and they seemed to be ok with speed. Well not trying to plug newshosting but just thought you guys should know that I dont think there is any traffic shaping from sky, esp since my dl speeds are almost the same in the day and evenings as well as the night!

Re: Slow speeds only on usenet (giganews)??

I have encountered exactly the same problem. I'm a long-time user of giganews with GrabIt as my client, and have been very happy with the downloads I've received. However, in the last couple of days, I've noticed that my download speeds are now 50-80 KB/s, far lower than the 400 I used to be getting. This is day and night. Also, piggybacking on my neighbour's Sky BB service, the same has happened to him too.

I think the evidence is mounting that Sky are starting the shaping.
