WARNING: take no notice of the speedtest sites at night
Like many others I have been getting myself all depressed by very poor download figures during the evening. But today I have managed to get my newsgroup account set up and running and the results have astonished me.
This morning I was downloading from astraweb news servers at a very steady 3000 kbps using Newsleecher and double checking speeds on Netlimiter. The 3 speed check sites I have been using (adslguide, namesco and speedtest.net) all showed more than that (up to 3700) - and yes I did stop the server downloads when I did the speed tests. These are my typical off peak speeds.
Now by 7.30 tonight the speed test sites were all down to under 500 - week nights it's usually 700ish. But guess what? The astranews server had hardly taken a hit and was banging down at a (slightly less) steady 2900. I got the latest episode of Lost (357MB) in 17 minutes flat!
The moral of the story is take no notice whatever of these speed test sites in the evenings - they are subject themselves in a bigger way than you might think to the general overload of the web at this times. Find yourself a reliable high speed server and use this as your guide.
I am on the connect package btw, syching at 4500 and a very happy camper indeed!Last edited by Restorer; 15-10-06 at 08:44 PM.
