      What Speeds should I expect?

      Hi all.

I have been reading these forums for about 1 week now. I got Sky Connect installed about 8 days ago now (Sky Mid not in area yet ) and my connection seems very poor. I will add to this post tonight when I Finish work with some of the speed test results etc. But for now this is what I can remember:

      Distance from exchange:
You are around 1.59 kilometres from your exchange (as the crow flies).
Router Reported Connection Speed: About 4Mbps
Speed test results from http://speedtester.bt.com: 357kbps

I am looking to find out what speeds I should be getting

Hello AbernusUK and welcome to the site if you could post your router stats then we should get an indication from there

      Back @ Home

Right now that I am back at home time to update this thread:

My router is connected to the main socket to the house, and is using the BT dual socket thing, not the microfilter atached at the end of a small wire.

All phone sockets in the house have Microfilters on them

      I have turned off uPnP

I have rebouted my router most days since I got the connection Last Tuesday.

I have used the TCP Optimiser

Here is what the router reports:

      System Up Time 01:00:21
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 22722 25784 0 977 8033 00:59:48
      LAN 10M/100M 26132 23179 0 8133 1121 01:00:19
      WLAN 11M/54M 0 0 0 0 0 00:00:00

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5088 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 49.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 5.4 db 19.0 db

I have just tried some of the speedtests in the sticky thread and here are those results:

      http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/
      Download: 385 kbps
      Upload: 373 kbps

Just downloaded SmartFTP from dwonloads.com with a blistering average speed of: 12.3 KB/sec

Also tried the FTP download with an average speed of 56.74 KB/s

These speeds are very low, video from YouTube also loads very slow compared to my old BT connection.

Please can some tell me if they think thats these speeds for a Sky Connect with a maximum speed of 8Mbps are poor?

Addition: I don't use wirless connection, all my PC's in the house are connected via a 10/100 switch

      Thanks

if it is still rubish after 10 days (there is a 10 day training period) then phone TS, connect is on the IPStream MAX from BT wholesale so its not 100% Sky network, on IPStream MAX dsl i could only get 1.2-1.5 Mb with a line attenuation of 45db.
what sort of speeds and what package was you on and who with before moving to sky ?

      Previous Connection

Before I moved to Sky I was with BT Openworld with a max connection available of 8Mb but we only managed an average connection of about 4 - 4.5mb. With a download limit of 50Gb a month

My newsgroup connection used to maintain an average connection of about 3.3Mb and as for downloads I can't remember the figure but I know it was a hell of a lot faster that this one.

Well if I have to wait 10 days then that makes it Friday my last day to wait. I can't see the speeds increasing, so as luck would have it I am off work that day so I will be straight on the phone to TS and asking for Tier3 support (See my story in the Sky Unhappiness thread)

      New results

O.K as I am off work today I got to test my line for the first time before the rest of the UK wakes up. it's 07:49 am and I just ran the test again from: http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/:
      Download: 3683kbps
      Upload: 372 kbps

Much better results, and I have not changed a thing on my PC or router. I suspect when I test agin later on in the night I will get back to the usuall speed of less the 512!!!!!! (Dialup is looking like a good option)

      Problems Continue

Well things are getting worse here My average download speed (as tested by BT Openword site) is an average 78.3KB/Sec (Should be around 400-700)

After a lengthy call (Again) to TS they advised my connection should be arround 5.8Mbps and yes the router does report this but the tests show otherwise. So after about 20 mins got put through to Tier 2 at 22:50 on Saturday 14. They advsied that the problem sounds like it's on the Exchange and they would need to log a call with BT. Also advised they would call me back today

Well no call today so I called them (this time on the 0800 number) Only to be told that Tier 2 closed today at 20:00 and I would have to call back tomorrow before 20:00

Funny how they work late on weekends but finish early on weekdays. I really think Sky should of sorted out the TS side of this before launching such a product, as they are clearly not ready to support/run this yet!

I feel a call to BT coming here asking for my old connection back.

Speedtests are never accurate! So never bother with those!

      New Update

Just to mention I have also tried downloading from newsgroups as well and am getting about 331Kbps, a very slow speed, and yes more reliable than he speedtest sites

Anyway called Sky today about my ticket with Tier2 only to be yold it had been closed the day after I raised it.

I now have another ticket riased with them, thi time they tried to tell me that it could be a Virus or Spyware on my PC!!!!!! No my PC is totaly clean as this is a brand new PC only a few days old (my old server blew up , literaly)

So I will keep you all posted as to what happens with this new ticket

This could be the source of my problems:

BT is reporting that some of the virtual paths at this exchange are not operating within BT Wholesale's planning guidance, although they are still operating within the product specification.

At busy times, your ADSL connection may operate at a reduced speed, although not all customers on your exchange may be affected. You should only contact support if there is no current ETA date set.

The ETA fix time is: 19 Oct 06

Record last updated: 09 Oct 06
