Dramatic slowdown - 1/6th of original speed

      Hi all,

Basically, I've been with Sky Unlimited for nearly 2 years now - the broadband speed has always been roughly constant, at around 7998kpbs download.

However, in the past couple of months, the speed has dropped dramatically to 1394kpbs, and frankly it's doing my head in.

I'm just wondering if anyone here can shed a light on what's gone on before I contact Sky CS.

      Here are my router stats:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1394 kbps 798 kbps
Line Attenuation 39.5 db 21.7 db
Noise Margin 7.1 db 15.7 db

I'm running the Sagem F@st 2504, from the entry telephone socket (the main one).

      Cheers
      Wib

1 - Plug your router into the test socket (restart it too) and post your stats.

2 - Change the micro-filter and post your stats.

Unfortunately mate, I can't do the first one, as when I tried my house alarm went mental - it's connected to the phone line for monitoring etc.

However, I can show you the results of the second test:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1543 kbps 798 kbps
Line Attenuation 40.0 db 21.6 db
Noise Margin 7.5 db 15.6 db

      So a decrease in speed

Testing your test socket is important as it would rule out any problems with your wiring. When you ring Sky they will ask you to do the same.

Can your house alarm be disabled for a while?

      or

You can ignore it for a moment while you get your stats. Should not take more than 2-3 minutes.

I can't ignore it or disable it - if I do they send police or a security company around, and if I'm wasting their time I get billed. Is there no other way to test?

Right, At what point did the alarm go off? Was it when you removed the front cover of your socket or when you plugged your router into the test socket?

As soon as the socket came off, once the bit that was attached to the test socket was removed

Sorry mate no other way of testing it. You may want to try a different DSL cable (cable from router to micro-filter) or a different router if you have one.

You could also ring the alarm company and explain the situation to them.

I don't think Sky will offer you much help if you can't plug your router into your test socket.

Re: Dramatic slowdown - 1/6th of original speed

As Exdee has said, Sky won't be able to help you unless you can test with the test socket. If they send an engineer around and find a problem with your internal wiring, you'll get a bill from them/BT.

I'm sure the alarm company must be used to these things so give them a call and explain things and they can probably ignore the calls for a few minutes.

As said, the alarm is the likely cause. It shouldn't be wired directly into the socket. Ideally you would be good to get a filtered faceplate and then get the alarm wired into an unpluggable box (like a microfilter)
