      Totally stuck- abysmal download speeds

I have the 8mb connect package, using netgear WPN 111 usb adaptor (connects at 108mbs, "very good" signal). Modem stats report as follows:-

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 14773 19970 0 3670 18337 00:22:35
      LAN 10M/100M 135 0 0 25 0 00:22:54
      WLAN 11M/54M/108M 20367 15070 0 18539 3856 00:22:44

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 18.0 db 11.0 db
Noise Margin 12.3 db 25.0 db

But using a variety of online speedtests never get above 2500kbps and often as low as 300.
Downloading from websites is worst, with most starting at about 50-60kbps adn dropping after a few seconds to 20-30.
The final straw was when my upload speed showed higher than the download on a speed test.
Sky are as helpful as a chocolate teapot and I am really at the end of my tether with this, I`ve gone from a perfectly adequate Pipex 2mb connection to this, all to save a few pounds per month, and am beginning to think I`ve made a huge mistake and am now stuck for the next 12 months.
      Any suggestions gratefully received

      1) Have you tried turning off Upnp?

      2) Change the wireless in the router to Auto108

      See if they help

Thanks for the tips, adaptor was already set to auto 108mbs, I turned off uPNP and did a speedtest on the adslguide website, got a download of 714kbps
There must be something fundamentally wrong with my settings if my router is connected at over 8000 but my download speed is so poor.

      I`ll trade your 1.7mbps for my 700kbps
On a more serious note, really not sure what to do next, sky aren`t/won`t help, I`m outside the cancellation period and this is going to niggle me in a big way for the next 12 months if I can`t sort it.
I`m hoping I can cancel on the ground they aren`t offering the service they advertise, if not I`ll have to pay the year to get out of the contract (assuming it doesn`t get sorted out first)
