Speed Issue - Master socket checked

for a while Ive noticed my downloads at around 700kb/s, they used to be around 1mb so did some investigating to find out whats wrong!

Originally the router is plugged into the master socket (with filter)

There is an extension on another floor which has a filter and phone + bell attached AND also the little sky splitter/connector to bring the phone extension to ground floor where the sky box is

      sky speed test:

      download: 6024kbps
      upload: 668kbps

      Orginal stats:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7005 kbps 798 kbps
Line Attenuation 32.0 db 16.0 db
Noise Margin 8.3 db 16.5 db

So I noticed its syncing at 7mb! explains the download speed!

I also checked exchange info from the checker on here:

      Distance:- Direct: 0.99 mi
      (appx)* By Road: 1.4 mi
      Service Enabled On
      ADSL Enabled: March 31, 2000
DSL Max Enabled: March 31, 2006
      SDSL Enabled: July 30, 2004

Did a direct master socket test (all extensions disconnected):

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7005 kbps 798 kbps
Line Attenuation 31.5 db 19.3 db
Noise Margin 9.5 db 17.0 db

So the noise margin increased somewhat, is it alot?

I then did some more tests with the master socket with 2 more filters and a new phone cable:

direct test - new filter *1

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7005 kbps 798 kbps
Line Attenuation 31.5 db 19.3 db
Noise Margin 9.9 db 16.6 db

direct Test - New filter *2

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7005 kbps 798 kbps
Line Attenuation 31.5 db 19.5 db
Noise Margin 8.9 db 16.9 db

Direct Test - New cable with New filter*2

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7005 kbps 798 kbps
Line Attenuation 31.5 db 19.4 db
Noise Margin 9.6 db 17.1 db

I imagine the drop in noise margin from master socket to day-to-day setup is because of the phone/bell/sky splitter on the extension socket?

is it worth me ringing sky to see if anything can be done?

It looks like your line or router has developed a fault. You should be syncing at 12-13Mb with your attenuation. Do a quiet line test by pluggging a corded phone into the Test socket and dialing 17070, listen and if you have any noise report it to your phone rental provider as a noisy line. Do not mention broadband at this stage.

If you have another router, plug it in and look at the sync speed. You will not be able to connect without the Sky details in it, but a comparison of the sync speeds will show if the router is faulty.

Re: Speed Issue - Master socket checked

Ok I will try a different router. Currently I am using the netgear dg834, it's pretty old and has a flashed firmware to allow wake on LAN, this may actually be the issue, luckily I also have the sky sagem router which I will try

With regards to noise on the line, sadly I don't have a corded telephone but I will try to get one to test the line, I currently pay line rental to sky so should I contact them or BT?

Re: Speed Issue - Master socket checked

      Ok
I have just tested the line with the sky sagem router and unfortunatley I get similar results

the sky user speed test shows:

      download: 6084kbps
      upload: 659kbps

the sagem router is also showing:

      down connection 7004kbps
      up connection 798kbps

      Mode: ADSL2+
      Line Coding: Trellis On
      Status: No Defect
      Link Power State: L0

      Downstream Upstream
      SNR Margin (dB): 6.8 17.1
      Attenuation (dB): 33.0 17.4
      Output Power (dBm): 9.5 19.1
      Attainable Rate (Kbps): 7452 945
      Rate (Kbps): 7004 798

Therefore I presume the line has developed a fault as I have exhausted all other avenues, what would be the best way to go about getting it fixed?

Any advice/tips would be very much welcomed.

Unfortunately if you do not have noise on your voice line it is very difficult to get this fixed. If your rental is with Sky, phone the Sky phone help line and tell them you have intermittent noise on your line. Make sure you tell them it is intermittent. They may send out an engineer to check the line. If you are there when he comes you could mention the broadband problem to him.
