So can you take the stats from the test socket and post them up then?

Re: can i get any more speed?

      Hi!

so my router stats while attached to the sky telephone extension cable is

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 14081 kbps 928 kbps
Line Attenuation 31.0 db 15.1 db
Noise Margin 7.1 db 8.5 db

which i believe corresponds to potential speeds of between 12Mb-14Mb according to SkyUser - Potential ADSL2 Line Speed Checker & Calculator

my router stats at the test socket is

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 14123 kbps 891 kbps
Line Attenuation 30.5 db 14.9 db
Noise Margin 7.3 db 8.0 db

which corresponds to potential speeds of between 14Mb-16Mb

so, what shall i do now?! I'm clearly losing potential speed with having this set up as it is. Should i purchase a XTE-2005 (XTE-2005 Filtered Master Faceplate - ADSL Nation) face plate and replace my current face plate, which should be simple enough to do. Then run a long Rj11 cable from the filtered faceplate to the router in the living room? As for the phone, i could maybe just move that to the master socket, not too bothered about that.

Also, if i do the above, do i need to get sky to re test my line or anything, since i'm capped at 14Mb?

      cheers for the help

      z

To be honest your figures are not that different. Unless you loose speed and start getting drop outs, I would leave things as they are. 14Mb is a reasonable sync speed for your attenuation.

      ok.

just out of curiosity, if i were to get a replacement faceplate and do some re wiring, would i then need to contact sky to get them to re test my line and raise the cap from 14Mb to 16Mb?

      cheers

No because your line is already at its limit within the test socket which will give identical stats as a faceplate filter. The only thing that might improve it is if the faceplate filter was of a higher quality than the filter(s) your currently using.

Re: can i get any more speed?

i thought with a line attenuation of 30.5 db (14Mb-16Mb) at the test socket, that the line wasn't quite at its limit?

as i said, i was thinking of replacing the faceplate with a XTE-2005, which i see lots of people on here recommend. Would that help? and if so, would i THEN need to speak to sky to re test my line to up the cap to 16Mb, or does it just happen or something?

Re: can i get any more speed?

As I said it may only make a slight difference as the filter in the xte-2005 is better than the filters sky supply. Attenuation is only one part of the puzzle as to line speed, noise margin is much more important you noise margin is at the default of 7 which indicates your line is maxed out.

That's splitting hairs I'm afraid. The difference between 30.5 and 31 is very small. It's just the ones who make up the charts have to have some sort of demarcation point for each speed. In this case they choose 30.5 but in the real world it means nothing and also depends on what chart you consult. If your attenuation had improved by 6 or 7 dbs, then it may have been worthwhile pursuing the matter, but as I said before, with an attenuation over 30 dbs you are doing very well to get 14Mb.
