These are my 2 latest tests with Speedtest.net. Isn't it strange that I have the better ping figure for the farthest server. Maybe the distance is not that important over comparatively short distances.

I don't game online so I am not the least interested in ping figures and have not asked for Delays to be reduced. Speed and stability are far more important to the non-gamer..

The 11-12 that i had on copper apparently if i used a switch with it i could get it lower, So i dont know why ADSL isnt good for gaming?

Keeps on about ping to the USA, Who the hell from the UK would want to game in a USA server anyway? I think i remember my ping to be around the 100ms which isnt exacly bad its not as if im playing for money or anything just for fun.

Dont get me wrong though if i could get cable then i would most definetly try it but im quite happy on ADSL

Erm, every major online games like COD, Halo, Gears, they all have games hosted by people from USA.

Gaming is worldwide and the two biggest regions are UK and USA.

      And 100ms ping to USA?

      Someone needs a reality check.

Go speedtest to a California Server.

      You're just plain stupid.

Servers will always be different and like i said, MOST OF THE time, the further they are the more the ping.

I also said if they are the same this will always be the point.

When you speedtest servers are different. See the "hosted by" box.

And it just shows how bad you're connection is for latency.

You're maidenhead server ping is a joke.

You say speed is more important?

      ADSL aint the answer...

Note the bolded bits. As I mentioned earlier, it's perhaps time to get off the games and get an education.

I type at the speed of light.

I cannot gurantee grammer/spelling will be correct.

And i see you have ignored what i said 2 times now.

      I'll say it a third:

You say latency is not an issue with Sky Broadband.

Can you provide a speedtest from New Zealand, Wellington server?

Just to prove my point to you how bad it is.

Ive been off games for quite a while, maybe you should stop being in denail and accept ADSL isn't good for speed or latency.

Says the one who dosen't understand how ping works.

Then has an attempt to argue about it, fails and then trys to be clever and not reply to post's but just post spam.

I stopped reading for the fact you can't even spell 'grammar' correctly.

      re: General ADSL discussion

The point is, you look at the server and the distance.

If we were comparing connections now it would be like this:

You get a MASSIVE 64ms ping on Maidenhead and you say you are 100 miles away.

      I get 14ms and i am 200 miles away.
You are missing my point. At the time I took that test, my ping to Maidenhead was a MASSIVE 64ms - But my ping to another server also in Maidenhead was a LOWER 22ms - Can you see what I am saying?

2 Different servers, both in the same building, 2 different ping results. I would prefer the honesty of the ventrilo server tbh and not the reliability of the speedtest one.

To prove my point, here is another ping test to Speedtest.net - The distance from my house to their server hasn't shortened in the last couple of hours.

Speedtest is not reliable. There are too many considerations to factor into the equation.

That show's you the quality of connection, the quality of Cable vs ADSL.
Rubbish it proves nothing apart from the speedtest is not accurate in any way shape or form in my scenario. How can a test be 64ms and then shortly after it is 24ms - It's called traffic on the internet, amount of people using the internet etc etc

Now in an online game, my connection can connect to many servers further away than you and still have lower ping.
Most games have built in network control, QOS etc and so just because you have 10ms better ping than me does not mean you would have the advantage. Granted if you had 100ms better than me I would agree.

If i played gears/halo/cod with my connection and you did with you'res, i have a mojar advantage over you.
As a rule, how much do you pay for your internet access?

You would definitely have an advantage, as I play none of thse games.

And when people with ADSL connections host games, its just terrrible and just too laggy to play.
Again our opinions differ, having never had cable, I cannot compare. What I have had has been more than reliable, and definitely workable.

My point was you say ADSL is bad for gamers, I say different. We would never agree, as you want to tell me that your connection is far superior to mine. You won't accept the proof put in front of you, that ADSL is just as good, if not only for the reason it is cheaper.

Guys, remain respectful to each other please. Everyone is entitled to their view and if you don't agree with it, then battle your corner with logic and fact not name calling.

I've tried to allow this discussion to continue by splittng it into another thread, but if it resorts to name calling etc then I'll close it.
