      Caps/DLM/SNR tweaking questions

      Hi all.
Have spent today reading this forum, so thought I better sign up and see if anyone can help me.

I started my Unlimited BB 12 days ago. Knowing I was on an up to 10 day training period, I plugged my DG834GT (using ex sky equip as I prefer netgear to Sagem) into the test socket.
My home is 3 years old, new estate with new wiring from the exchange (1.4 miles by road)
I started at 4Mb down, 1 day later 7.2Mb down, 2 days later 10.5Mb down, all speeds rock solid, no drops no visible errors.
      Then problems.
On day 5, I had electrician in who had power on/off/on/off for a few hours. That night I had sync'ed at 8190Kbps.
After 8 Days was up I checked MySky and line testing was not taking place. It was finished.
Router reported then that max conn. speed possible was 8900kbps. Sync was at 8190k

Tried rebooting router twice, got 8190 then 8094k...

Tried snr tweak in DGTeam firmware (line is always stable no dropouts or errors, anytime of day, even with snr reported as 3.5db). Max possible reported speed has been as high as 12500k, but router has always synced at 8190, or somewhere between 8000 and 8190.

Here I am 12 Days in. Router stats are these-

Channel: FAST, Upstream rate = 796 Kbps, Downstream rate = 8054 Kbps
      Link Power State: L0
      Mode: ADSL2+
      Channel: Fast
      Trellis: U:ON /D:ON
      Line Status: No Defect
      Training Status: Showtime
      Down Up
      SNR (dB): 9.0 15.3
      Attn(dB): 39.5 21.1
      Pwr(dBm): 19.1 12.4
      Max(Kbps): 10876 1069
      Rate (Kbps): 8054 796

As you can see after a couple of tests with snr tweak I reset target snr to 100%, but lost 140k in speed due to 2 line drops when the modem re-sync'ed.

      My questions are these-
Dues snr tweaking work on Sky LLU ADSL2+? Mine does nothing except drop the reported snr?!
Can there be a cap put on a DLM line? I thought it retrained within a day or three if things improved?
If there is a cap, is it that which would restrict the snr tweak from altering sync speeds?

      Re: Caps/DLM/SNR tweaking questions

If there is a cap on the line it does not matter how much you 'tweak' it, you will get no more.

Sky DLM does not work like BT's, where there is a retraining period with a line drop. DLM trains the line then sits in the background until deterioration in line conditions cause it to kick in. It will then reduce the speed to a stable rate and leave it at that. It will not retrain upwards.

You have to phone Sky and tell them DLM has left your speed lower than it should be, could they set the line manually. You should get 9-10 Mb with your attenuation.

      Re: Caps/DLM/SNR tweaking questions

      Thanks.
Thats what I thought. DLM only goes down...

After another drop in power tonight (ongoing electrical work) router synced at 7600kbps.

Hopefully thats the last the power needs to be off.
I'll leave it for a few days now and see if the speed picks back up to the cap (8190).

I've emailed sky asking to have cap removed after power outages dropped/capped the DLM set speed. I'll wait and see, post back if I get it resolved.

      Thanks again...

      Re: Caps/DLM/SNR tweaking questions

Ok.... Emailed Sky, waited a week, got a reply that they have altered the settings to `improve stability`??

Anyways, here's what I am now-

      Status: ShowtimeRetrain Reason: 0
Channel: FAST, Upstream rate = 767 Kbps, Downstream rate = 10135 Kbps
      Link Power State: L0
      Mode: ADSL2+
      Channel: Fast
      Trellis: U:ON /D:ON
      Line Status: No Defect
      Training Status: Showtime
      Down Up
      SNR (dB): 4.3 15.9
      Attn(dB): 40.0 21.2
      Pwr(dBm): 19.5 10.6
      Max(Kbps): 10456 945
      Rate (Kbps): 10135 767

SNR tweaked to 50%, all seems good for now, so it's success.
      And 10Mb on a 40Db line!!

Remember, speed isn't the end all and be all, if you are getting errors on the line, this could actually reduce the true world speed and pings even if you sync speed shows a high figure.

You could also do a lot better on your upstream. Give them a ring and ask them to take the cap of it.
