      Fed up with slow connection

      Hi there everyone,

I have been with Sky Broadband now for a couple of years and have until now "put up" with the connection speed. I have read this forum from time to time, following ideas and reading the threads on how to optomise my settings for faster speeds.... Well I have tried most things you have all suggested in the forums but I am so fed up that I cannot even watch a 10 min You Tube video from beginning to end without it stopping and starting or better still waiting ages for it to buffer only for it to fail to start at all!

I would really appreciate any more advice of what I can try to get a better connection for watching You Tube and Iplayer.I am signed up to Sky Unlimited Broadband up to 20mb. I use a Toshiba Laptop running W7 wirelessly and sometimes I use my Iphone 3GS. My speedtest is in my signature and I will put my router stats below here. I believe I am about 1 mile (as the crow flies) from the local exchange.

      Connection Downstream 3069 Upstream 718kbps
Line Attuention Downstream 49db Upstream 30db
Noise Margin Downstream 13db Upstream 8db

      Many thanks in hope!!

      Gill

Your stats show you are capped, get on the phone to sky and your looking at getting another 2-3mb out of it.
You can also try posting your stats from your master test socket which will identify any internal wiring issue for us.

Re: Fed up with slow connection

Thank you for your reply. What should I say to Sky? I have tried to look for the Master Socket in our home, we have telephone cables running all over the house and several sockets in several rooms (the cabling is a mess from previous owner) I have never been able to find the Master Socket due to this and am frightened to start pulling out cabling in rooms that I dont use incase I make a costly mistake!
Thanks so much for you help I am grateful!

Oh and I just did a speed test using the meter on this website and realised that I must have done one here in 2009, below are the results, look at the speed I was getting back then.... I would even be happy getting that again.

We have detected that your ISP is Sky - Your current download speed is 2624Kbps, and your current upload speed is 574Kbps.

Re: Fed up with slow connection

You really should try to find your master socket, you could be loosing a lot of speed, especially if you have a lot of extensions. First look for a faceplate with a horizontal split across the face(NTE5a). If you find one, unscrew the 2 screws and ease of the lower portion of the faceplate. Behind it you will find a single socket, this is your test socket, plug the router in there. While the faceplate is off, go round your other extensions, whether they are in use or not and check that none of them have a dial tone.

If you don't have an NTE5 you are a bit more restricted, go to each socket and remove the faceplate. You are looking for one with a capacitor and other bits'n'pieces, this is the master socket. The master socket is usually the first socket one the line into the house, so trace where it comes in and start from there. If you do have an older type master, apart from replacing it, the only thing you can do is remove the wire from the No 3 terminal. This is the ring wire and is not required when using plug in filters.

It seems I dont have a test socket at all. I am working through the stages in the article posted to find the master socket, but I have a feeling its the one my router is already plugged in to!

Ok the socket in the hallway has the capacitor and I have a photo of it below. I have removed the orange wire from no 3 as suggested. There is an extension running off this socket, i think it goes round the front door and into the living room for the Sky HD box. What now? Do I phone Sky and ask them if they have capped my speed?

Re: Fed up with slow connection

That is your Master socket. Have you tried the stats since you took off the No 3 wire? Your speed will not increase, but hopefully your noise margin will go up a bit. Whether it does or not, phone Sky and tell them DLM has left your speed low, can they configure it manually to improve your connection.

Re: Fed up with slow connection

I would certainly be looking at getting that socket replaced with an NTE5, looks to be in pretty poor shape. BT can do this for you for a fee I dont happen to know the fee myself you would have to contact them and ask them about it. You could also fit it yourself, if you go down this route however get an NTE5 which has the BT openreach logo on it (ebay is the best location for these) ones without this logo make it look obvious to BT that you have done this yourself and they can get a bit annoyed about it!

Thanks for the advice Simon, I will definatley have a look on Ebay for this socket and get the better half to fit it! Goodness knows how long that socket has been there!
