Have you replaced the junction in the attic with an NTE5? If you did, where did you connect the telephone wires going down stairs? It looks to me like you connected these to the A-B terminals of the NTE5. If you did, this is wrong, they must be connected to the faceplate terminals 2 and 5. When the faceplate is removed there should be no wires connected to the NTE5 except the main incoming line. Plugging into the Test socket will then give you the cleanest connection possible.

      Hi
Thanks for coming back to me
What i've done - probably incorrectly by the sound of it! - is the main cable that comes into the attic from outside, its long enough to go through the floor in the attic to downstairs via trunking(we live in a bungalow so the distance isn't too far)
i've connected the two wires from the main cable to the A and B terminals on the NTE5 - and thats it - the NTE5 box is then screwed onto the wall downstairs, and the adsl filter is plugged into this box. See the pictures - the box isn't new as you can see - it was my fathers who's gone onto cable so didnt need it. Please tell me what i've done wrong !

That should be fine and exactly what is needed. To clarify, you now only have the one phone socket (the NTE5 in the picture), no more?

You appear to have connected it up properly

That only leaves the external line and the router. Have you tried it in the Test socket, just in case the faceplate is faulty? Is there any chance that you could get hold of another router to try?

Smithy, yes that socket is the only one in the whole house. We just have the one telephone connected to it and that has two other base units in the bedrooms - but they're just wireless handsets plugged into the mains, no other phone sockets are involved.

Isitme, thanks for the smiley !
I have tried it in the test socket and the results are almost identical as when i put the faceplate on
i may be able to borrow another router, annoyingly i sold my spare one on ebay a couple of weeks ago
assuming i need to ring someone, would i ring bt or sky first ?

The speed would remain the same, what you want to see is an increase in the noise margin.

I don't know if Sky could do anything, but it is worth a try. Tell them you have improved your house wiring and would like your speed reconfigured.

Re: my ever decreasing bb speed !

I emailed Sky using the form on this site, explained what I'd already tried and they mailed me back a couple of hours later to say they'd reset my line. And it's currently back on its max of 3.6Mb - which is nice. Hopefully my line will keep that speed okay.
Thanks to everyone for their advice on here, much appreciated

      Cheers
      Welshyyyyy
