Re: my ever decreasing bb speed !

I have just been up the attic and taken some pics of my cabling - pics are attached and they might show why I'm having issues !
i don't have a master socket in the house but as you can see the black cable comes into the house into the attic - it is then attached to the white cable in the attic with a connector (a BT engineer did this last year after our kitchen fitters accidently cut our cable in the kitchen - we didn't know they had done this and only noticed when our phone didn't work the day after - we called out BT and the engineer went up the attic as a favour (cos it was raining and we offered him a cuppa !) and re-joined the cable). That white cable then goes down some trunking from the attic into the lounge to the box where we plug the adsl filter in.

Looking at that connection - what are my best options ? ie can that connection be re-done by myself ?
      thanks

The junction box in the attic looks fine, the socket in the lounge has 3 cables to it, you should only need two, can you pull any cable out of any terminal other than 5 & 2.

What coloured cables are connected in the loft, it is hard to see from the picture?

You mention a socket in the kitchen, is it still there?

You look to have a Voice Jack Unit ( Telephones UK - Line Jacks scroll down) designed for private exchanges rather than a Line Jack Unit and the cable looks like alarm wire (which probably doesn't have twisted pairs) which probably means this was not a BT installation.

Assuming you have no other sockets as Smithy99 says you can remove the green wire which goes to terminal 3.

Just wondering how your kitchen fitter cutting a cable in the kitchen resulted in the BT engineer working in the loft?

Are you sure that is the only socket you have. It is not a master socket? Is there a box in the kitchen?

In any case the green wire can be removed.

Re: my ever decreasing bb speed !

in number 3 is a green cable - should i pull that out - would that be the ringer cable that isnt needed anymore ?

the socket in the kitchen isn't there anymore, just the cable hanging down - i think the BT guy cut and spliced together the original cable cutting out the kitchen part

the cables that are connected in the attic are erm, not sure - i'll have to pop back up there to look - cant do it at the mo tho as the missus is out and she has to hold the ladder - (the last time i did it without her the ladder fell over and left me marooned up there!)

As I said 'In any case the green wire can be removed." It will not really matter, as you don't have a master socket, it will not be connected.

To be honest, the cable does not even look like phone cable, it looks like 4 core electrical cable. I expect the BT engineer thought it was too big a job to replace it. It looks like the job was done by a sparky who did not have phone cable and thought it would not make any difference, but it does. It is hard to know what to recommend without knowing your exact lay out. One solution would be to replace the joint box in the loft with an NTE5 with a filtered faceplate and connect the router to it.

Just connect the 2 incoming 'live' wires to the A and B terminals on the NTE5 and you can't go wrong. It does not really matter what way round they go.
