      Poor download speeds

I have had a good download speed till just recently. A few weeks back i contacted sky and they reset my line, putting me back up over 10mb download speeds again. Unfortunately its dropped off again nearer to 5. No idea why. Here are my stats. Not sure whether my stats are good so any advice would be appreciated!

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 12049 kbps 997 kbps
Line Attenuation 33 db 17 db
Noise Margin 5 db 7 db

Your sync is around 11-12Mb? your noise margin is a bit low though, how are you connecting the router to the telephone line?

Hi can you do a speed test from http://www.skyuser.co.uk/speedtester/ or thinkbroadband :: Broadband Speed Test or Broadband Speed Checker - THE UK's No.1 Broadband Speed Test as they are more accurate than speedtest.net do all three and paste to your next post to see if there is a difference.

It could be down to your SNR dropping and causing errors, slowing the throughput. Power cycle the router and re-take the speedtest, preferably via another speed test site (such as the one on this site).

If the speeds return much like the previous results, then is that wireless or ethernet ran? If wireless, run another speed test via ethernet cable and see if you get a better throughput.

How many computers/devices are connected to the router?

Probably a new wireless network in your area which is interfering with yours. You might find changing the router channel will give you an improvement. Download Inssider from the link below and use it to discover the networks in your area. Choose a channel as far from those in use as possible.

You should really try to get a speedtest done by ethernet. If you can't move your PC, have you got a friend with a laptop that could do a test for you?

So why am i not able to get the same speeds using wireless? I have seen them this high before but only when sky reset my line. Checked the channels and moved it to a free one away from others.

Very very few get the same speed with wireless as they do with ethernet. Apart from the overhead caused by encryption, there are so many radio sources, apart from other networks, that it is just about impossible. Some find that just switching a microwave oven on makes their connection almost unusable. Dect phones, baby monitors, AV TV senders all contribute to the clutter in the airwaves.

You could see if any updated drivers are available from the wireless adapters manufacturer, that may help improve your speed.
