Low connection speed and noise margin

      Hi

Prior to a fault with the phone line last week I used to achieve a sync speed of 2048kpbs which was set by sky's line test.

The fault has been fixed by Openreach, but I now only sync at 761kbps. Sky say that DLM has been reactivated on the line and the speed should increase over the next 10 days. However with a noise margin of 8db am I right in saying that I won't get higher sync speeds?

      Current router stats

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 761 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 53.5 db 32.8 db
Noise Margin 8.0 db 12.0 db

Re: Low connection speed and noise margin

You are correct, your noise margin does not leave much room for improvement. Can you plug into the Test socket and take your stats from there. Even 2 Mb was very low for your attenuation.
How to test your ADSL in the Master Socket

Re: Low connection speed and noise margin

Don't have a test socket. The master is the old type installed in the 80's and is where the stats were taken from.

Both the master and the extension are directly wired to a junction box in the hall.

Looks like Openreach haven't solved the problem that we had last week, I'll have to get back onto them

Both the master and the extension are directly wired to a junction box in the hall.
That always creates problems. If you are handy with a screwdriver, try temporarily disconnecting the extension at the junction box. See if there is any change in your stas.

It looks like there is still a fault in your external line

See if you can get him to fit a new NTE5 master socket for you whislt he is there, it will make things easier in the future ans you could then use a filtered faceplate.

Re: Low connection speed and noise margin

The engineer insists that there is no fault on the line, but it seems too much of a coincidence that an unrelated broadband error occured at the same time that the phone line needed repair.

Had the new master socket fitted as you suggested Smithy, looking into getting a face plate now.

What are your stats like in the Test socket?
