      Laughable Broadband Speeds

      Hey there,

Wondering if anyone here would be able to shed some light on my situation. I've had 'Sky BB Unlimited' since Sept 09, and at the time of signing up they said I would only be able to recieve 4 meg ... I was fine with that as I just wanted to get up and running and whilst download speeds wearnt amazing (350kb) I just dealt with it but just lately I feel my connection has dropped considerably. Every thing I download bottlenecks on around 60kb.

Could you have a look at my stats and let me know if this is normal please lol

Your stats show a lot of noise on the line, possibly caused by your extension wiring, first step is to eliminate them.

Plug your router into the master test socket and post your statistics.

BTW When you plug a phone into your line can you hear any pops crackles buzzing etc.

      Re: Laughable Broadband Speeds

As advised get the router stats again from the TEST socket, see the quick links to the left for instructions on how to do this. Also ensure you have a filter in EVERY phone point and that it is the very FIRST thing plugged into it.

With your attenuation, you should be getting around 8mb but at the moment you have some serious noise on the line, the test socket stats will show if it is your end or the main line causing this.

When you expose the TEST socket, all the other sockets in the house should be dead, also when you remove the faceplate, check you only have wires in terminal 2 & 5, if there are any in terminal 3, pull them out, you don't need them and it can cause noise.

      Really ? ? ....

I managed to find the elusive screwdriver, and here are my results ....

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3067 kbps 797 kbps
Line Attenuation 50 db 31 db
Noise Margin 9 db 13 db

Doesnt seem much different, does it..... ?

And also I called 17070 to test the phoneline for crackling and popping whilst in the test socket, and nothin ..

Did you check the other sockets were dead?

Do you have a house alarm that could be connected to the phone line to dial out or monitor?

      Re: Laughable Broadband Speeds

Given the rise in your attenuation I would say the plug in the Test socket is not making proper contact or it is not really the Master socket. There are cases where NTE5 boxes have been used on extensions. Check that it is the Master and if it is, give the socket a clean by sliding the plug in and out a few times wiggling it at the same time. A squirt of WD40 helps remove old residue and cleans up the connection.
