Hmm, after posting that, been reading more about the legal side of things - I'm not really meant to touch that junction box am I... still, nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Alright - silly question time, what sort of wire do I use to extend the cables down to the master then? Also, assume you're talking the red & black wires going into A & B?

EDIT - don't worry. Have taken the master box off the wall at the bottom and moved it up to meet the junction box. Have re-connect the red/black onto A & B on the master socket and plugged the router into the test socket (works!). Will post stats shortly...

Ok - not much different, sync speed slightly lower and NM not hugely higher either:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4089 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 45.0 db 25.0 db
Noise Margin 8.1 db 11.5 db

      Any margin for improvement there?

Yes the red & black, it doesn't matter which way around but for the sake of ease if you can move a - a and b - b.

I would just move the master up for now and leave it hanging just to get the router stats etc, this will show us what you are likely to get when done properly.

As for the legalities, you will breach BT's T&C's so it is not a criminal act and as it is done incorrectly now, what harm can it really do.

So you are going to disconnect the master and then connect it back up to the main incomming wires which connect to the a&b and then plug the router directly into the test socket (which will now work) and get the stats again.

Ok - done (edited above post).

Stats not much different but should I be disconnecting that orange wire in the junction box too?

Re: Connected two weeks ago - the best I can do?

At the moment, I assume you have the two main BT cables connected directly to the NTE5 master socket, if so then the rest of the wiring is removed from the equation and cannot be interfering with anything.

Can you post the stats again from the test socket with just the microfilter connected, it may also be worth giving it a spray of WD40 and wiggling it in and out a few times as it has not been used for a while so may not be making a great connection.

Also, if the stats don't change, try swapping the wires around at the a&b terminals, it shouldn't do anything but I am sure I have seen improvements doing this.

Re: Connected two weeks ago - the best I can do?

Tried swapping A and B over - no real change. Don't have any WD40 but may pick some up tomorrow and then go from there. Left the microfilter plugged into the test socket with the router in that. Have put the phone back in too as the missus won't let the phones be off for too long.

      Thanks for all your help.

Re: Connected two weeks ago - the best I can do?

Well, next day and stats about the same - NR hovers around 8 outside the peak (that's with the router plugged into the test socket directly) and down to early 7s at busy times.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4091 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 45.0 db 25.0 db
Noise Margin 7.6 db 12.0 db

Might be able to sneek a wee bit more speed out of it? I assume it's time to call Sky and get them to have look (not much more I can do)??

Re: Connected two weeks ago - the best I can do?

Well, by way of update, I've left my router connected to the test socket (no real change to the stats above) but concluded it's about as good as I'm going to get so I emailed Sky to get them to reconfigure the sync, etc...

Very quick reply (within a day or so) and solution. I've gained about 60% more!

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6880 kbps 800 kbps
Line Attenuation 41.0 db 25.0 db
Noise Margin 7.0 db 16.0 db

For some reason, attenuation has gone down by 4 - didn't think Sky could control that in any way as it's down to the line itself? Oh well, quite happy with that now, although reckon I could chance my arm and squeeze a little bit more out of them (NM becomes an issue though I guess).

Thanks all for help here - very, very helpful.

Re: Connected two weeks ago - the best I can do?

They may have moved you from ADSL2 to G.dmt, this will lower your attenuation and is better for longer lines.
