Reasonable DL speeds but slow to DL an actual file
Hello. I am having problems with my download speed at the moment because whenever I run a speed test or look at the speed checking built in to the router firmware, it is saying I have about 3000 kbps, but when I download a file I only got speeds around 300 kbps.
I have tried to download a regular file off the internet, and also tried several others and I seem to hit around 310 kbps maximum, but average out at around 300. Also I have tried downloading a torrent - and that also appears capped.
Although interestingly, if I limit the download speed within my torrent client to about 5 kbps (and wait for it to slow down to that speed) and then set the limit to 1500 kbps, the download does reach speeds up to 1500 kbps for a few seconds, but then settles back to 300.
Router stats:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3067 kbps 797 kbps
Line Attenuation 48 db 29 db
Noise Margin 14 db 14 db
Speedtest.net results:
Pingtest.net results:
Thanks if you can provide any help with this!!.

Re: Reasonable DL speeds but slow to DL an actual file
Your stats show that you have been capped, because of the higher noise margin you would need to contact sky to get this increased, you could also be on ADSL2+ as well, with the attenuation you have you would be better off on G.DMT which would give you a higher speed.

Re: Reasonable DL speeds but slow to DL an actual file
Ok thanks, so if I contact Sky what should I say to them?
Also, what do you mean by ADSL2+ and G.DMT?
Thanks,.

Re: Reasonable DL speeds but slow to DL an actual file
You will need to ask for CST as they are the ones who can change the speed and say that your speed is capped and you would like it increased.
ADSL2+ and G.DMT are the modes that sky use that the routers can connect with. On a longer line like yours G.DMT normally gives a faster speed than ADSL2+, when you phone ask them what mode you are connected with and ask them to try both options to find which gives the greater speed.

Re: Reasonable DL speeds but slow to DL an actual file
I think there's probably a bit of confusion here. You're not getting that download speed because you've been capped. Your web browser or torrent client will report the speed in kiloBYTES per second (kB/s), where the router reports the connection speed in kiloBITS per second (kbps). One byte is eight bits, so 3000kbps is the same as 375kB/s. In reality, some of the bandwidth is taken up by overheads for the purpose of managing the connection, so about 310kB/s is the best you can hope for.
Basically, there's nothing wrong with your connection - it's just that your router and your software use different units.

I agree, there is some confusion and you are making it worse, he is capped.
His sync speed has been capped by Sky, this is shown by the higher that default noise margin, his is 14db, the default is 6.9db, this clearly indicates that he has more speed in hand.

Re: Reasonable DL speeds but slow to DL an actual file
Post your router stats, nothing else will give an indication.

Re: Reasonable DL speeds but slow to DL an actual file
for UP TO 20Mbps 8.9Mbps is actually good...as is anything else from 512kbps to 20Mbps
