      Re: Slow internet

You are never going to see 20Mb with an attenuation of 40 Dbs, you are doing quite well with 9216kbps. You are paying for an up to 20Mb connection, what you get depends on how long your line is. The only way you will get much more is to move closer to the exchange

      What does attenuation mean?

and there is no way to move closer to the exchange really is there. so is there anything i can do on my end to improve the speed?

Attenuation is basically measured on the line length & quality of your telephone line from your local exchange. The higher the attenuation, the least speed you'll push out. If you think that your speed is slow with a sync speed of 9216kbps, then I'd look into the networking side on your end such as if you're connecting wirelessly etc.

On saying that, your noise margin is rather low - I'd reboot the router and you'll sync in at a slower speed, but a much better throughput giving the impression of a quicker speed. Also, you could try plugging into your test socket and re-taking the stats to see if you can make any improvement in your sync speed (as for the set-up at the moment, you cannot).

      Re: Slow internet

Basically the attenuation is the amount of power a line looses between the send and receive points. It is measured in dbs, the higher the figure the longer the line. Although line length is the main factor, the actual physical condition of the line contributes to the final figure.

If your internal wiring is in a good condition there is not a lot you can do. To check this, if you have extensions, remove the faceplate from your master socket and plug your router into the Test socket you will find behind it. Click the Test socket link below, for more information. Post your stats from there.

EDIT BT are working on my line today, got a Server not Found when I first tried to send this. Their van is gone so hopefully no more drop outs.

      Re: Slow internet

Sorry for the slow reply got caught at work.

Iv plugged the router into the test port and heres what i got

      Downstream Upstream
      Data Rate(Kbps) 9216 870
      Noise Margin 13.4 8.5
      Output power 0.2 1.5
      Attenuation 39.5 17.5

The noise margin seems to have increased but i dont know what that actually does. is that good?

      what should i try next?

      Re: Slow internet

You have a much higher noise margin which indicates your internal wiring is causing interference. Buying, fitting and using a filtered faceplate would solve the problem and should increase your speed to about 11Mb.

      Re: Slow internet

I have ordered the faceplate professional and a different adsl cable just to see if it helps.

When it arrives and is installed i shall obviously repost my results to show you. is there anything else you can recommend to increase the speed?

      Re: Slow internet

I have bought and installed the XTE 2005 professional and here are my stats

      Downstream Upstream
      Data Rate(Kbps) 15340 884
      Noise Margin 7.7 8.5
      Output power 1.2 1.5
      Attenuation 39.5 17.5

I do have a much improved download speed however when i use the wireless computer it still seems a little slow and does time out so im thinking it might be the router slowing the signal
