Upgraded to "Unlimited" from "Everyday" - connection now slower

As I have been edging near the 10GB limit, and fancied a faster connection, I decided to upgrade from the "Everyday" broadband package to the "Unlimited" broadband package. I contacted Sky and arranged this on the telephone, and received a letter today confirming that my package was changed a couple of days ago.

However, I have noticed that my connection did not seem to be any faster, and at times was painfully slow. I use the speedchecker tool on this website fairly frequently, and previously I was getting around 4400Kbps download and 400Kbps upload speeds.

Whilst the upload speeds are now around 700Kbps, the download speed has reduced considerably - speeds of around 2000Kbps are typical, with at times the speed being as low as 400Kbps.

I have cycled the power on the router as another post here suggested. The performance is similar as to whether I am connected wirelessly via either my linux box or the wifes ipod, or using a Vista laptop with a cable into the router.

If its any use, these (I think) are my router stats:
      System Up Time: 13:50:28
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 60068 64931 0 228 1476 13:49:34
      LAN 100M/Full 2319 0 0 5 0 13:50:23
      WLAN 11M/54M 66819 61658 0 1500 231 13:50:10
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5700 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 35 db 19 db
Noise Margin 11 db 16 db

Can anyone offer any advice on how I should proceed from here? Is it a case of getting on to Sky, or should I wait a few days to see how things square up? What sort of perfomance should I be expecting?

      Any advice most gratefully received.

      Dave

(Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere - I have had a good look around the forums and cannot see if this has been answered).

You will have been put on DLM (Line Training), which you should have been told about by Sky, when you were moved onto the Unlimited package. You will have to leave it for at least 10 days then if not satisfied with your speeds get back in contact with Sky.

How much of a "good look around the forums" did you have as this sort of thing has been reported widely.

Many thanks for the quick reply neil.

I did see a fair bit of stuff about DLM (and even googled what it was!) when searching the forums, but got it into my head that this was not the problem as I already had broadband from Sky, and would have experienced issues arising from this prior to upgrading.

They did not make any references to DLM when I contacted them. Most of our conversation was about why I did not have Sky Talk, and a fairly heavy sales push on the benefits of high definition telly - the broadband aspects of the conversation was very brief.

I'll give it a couple of weeks and post again for advice if problems continue.

      Cheers

      Dave

DLM is put on lines which are upgraded, Sky should inform you of this but from what others have posted, they don't appear to. Remember to keep your router plugged in and powered up while line training is in progress as switching it off can have a bad effect on the final speed..

Re: Upgraded to "Unlimited" from "Everyday" - connection now slower

Me (original poster) again. Just to update how I am getting along...

Over two weeks have passed since I upgraded from "Everyday" to "Unlimited" so I am guessing that the DLMing of my line has now completed. During that time, my speed was consistently below 500kbps - too slow to watch Sky Player without it frequently "buffering".

Call me old fashioned, but I would have expected that if I upgraded to a faster package, I would have experienced faster connection speeds (??!!).

Prior to upgrading, typical download speed was around 4400kbps. Now the most I appear to be getting is around 2800kbps.

Upload speed appears to have increased from around 400 to 650.

Router was left plugged in/powered up over the last two weeks.

Is this typical of what I should expect? I plan to contact Sky tomorrow to have a whinge!

OK, time to repost your stats please, both from the normal router position and again from your test socket, if you have one. Sky User - How to test your Master Socket

Please make sure you power off/on the router as you go.

Re: Upgraded to "Unlimited" from "Everyday" - connection now slower

      Many thanks for getting back.

These are my router stats from the normal position (my desktop PC in the office, connecting wirelessly to my router in the hallway).

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 515726 844711 0 106 3123 104:15:10
      LAN 100M/Full 44619 0 0 4 0 300:25:29
      WLAN 11M/54M 463463 315242 0 1678 87 99:52:25
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4091 kbps 798 kbps
Line Attenuation 35 db 19 db
Noise Margin 14 db 12 db

I have had a look at my master socket. Unfortunately its in a fairly awkward spot - my (electical) consumer unit is in front of it, and getting a screwdriver in there is a bit difficult. I will bring home a stubby screwdriver from work tomorrow and try again!!

In the meantime, I have powered off/on the router, and these are the stats following the restart (again measured from my desktop PC connecting wirelessly to my router in the hallway).

      System Up Time: 00:06:38
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 2386 3624 0 1250 17006 00:05:01
      LAN 100M/Full 60 0 0 17 0 00:06:33
      WLAN 11M/54M 4417 3224 0 14879 1224 00:06:20
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4091 kbps 798 kbps
Line Attenuation 35 db 19 db
Noise Margin 15 db 12 db

Would I be better reporting the stats by plugging my PC directly into the router using an ethernet cable, rather than wirelessly?

Again, many thanks for assistance and advice.

      Dave

Forgot to say, current speeds (as measured by the speed tester on this website) are:
      Download 3368 kbps
      Upload 492 kbps

Stats are reported the same from wireless or cable as they take the information from the same scource (router) and just display it.

if you were getting slow / unresponsive / laggy speeds on the computer, i would always test with it connected via cable to rule out any wireless issues (interferance)

Re: Upgraded to "Unlimited" from "Everyday" - connection now slower

It's important to see what your test socket reveals, particularly I'd want to see if your noise margin increases by much. At the moment you have a high enough margin to give you another couple of meg but realistically you should be able to get at least 10mbps with your current line attentuation so the higher that margin increases the better.

Do you have any other telephone sockets in the house?
