Expected Speed for new Sky 20mb unlimited connection

      Hi - great forum

Sky are taking over my broadband from onetel (2mb) on Wed 9 Sept. I've opted for the unlimited 20mb package and they've said I should get between 10mb-20mb, starting with 4mb on first day of line testing.

Have checked my current router stats with onetel and got the following router states - what speed can I expect from Sky?

      Router Stats
      Upstream / Downstream
      Noise Margin 30 dB / 27 dB
      Attenuation 36 dB / 32 dB

      Actual Data Rate
      Up Stream 288 (Kbps.)
      Down Stream 2272 (Kbps.)

      Grateful for any thoughts.

      Ian

Hi Ian, I left Sky for O2 Halfway through August, My attenuation was 36 same as yours, I got almost 8m on Sky Mid (before they upgraded to 10m). On O2's 20m BB I'm getting 11+

      Cheers Kidd.

My downstream attenuation is 32db - but the noise margin seems quite high at nearly 30dB. Just wondering if I'll get anywhere near the 20mb as I though SNR was best at 6dB?

I'd be happy if i got 16Mb tbh

The ADSL2+ checker on this site suggests:

      ADSL2+ Speed Test
We estimate your line is capable of between 12mb to 14mb broadband on an ADSL2+ service.

Bear in mind that this is only an estimate based on your line attentuation given perfect line conditions.

Sorry Ian I got your up/down mixed up, Your noise margin is high, Usually higher noise means lower sync but more stable.

A high noise margin does not equate to high noise. The higher the SNR margin the better in terms of getting a decent connection speed.

      Ian,

Can you post your stats whilst connected to the test socket, if you have one.

That shows that there may be some quality issues with your internal wiring. If you have any other phone sockets in the house and they're wired, as they should be, to the removable faceplate of your master socket can you take a look at whcih wires are connected (the connectors will be numbered) and remove any wires connected to no. 3 (just pull the wire up from the connector).

This is the ring wire and can be a broadband killer. It's no longer required, in fact only 2 and 5 should be connected.

Re: Expected Speed for new Sky 20mb unlimited connection

Will the noise margin reduce as line speed increases? I mean at the mo on 2meg bb from Onetel the noise margin is about 30dB. I keep reading everywhere that 6dB is the target?
