Speeds lower than expected ... line stats inside
Got a relative who switched to SKY broadband. They are on the upto 8mb package. The online speed check said they will get upto 3mb.
Their router stats are:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 767 kbps 412 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.5 db 25.8 db
Noise Margin 12.4 db 20.0 db
The above stats are good arent they? What kind of speed should they be getting with these stats?
Thanks

Re: Speeds lower than expected
With that attenuation they should get 5 maybe even 6 Mbs. If they have been connected for less than 10 days, DLM will be running on the line, it looks like it has capped it. Tell them to plug into the Test socket, link below and post the stats from there. Make sure that everything plugged into the phone line is running through a filter when using the normal position for the router.

Re: Speeds lower than expected
They have had it for a few months. They dont have a master socket. They have the old style. Everything is running through filters.

Re: Speeds lower than expected
That's a pity. Are they using the Master socket to connect the router? If not try it.
Another thing to try is opening the Master socket faceplate and removing the ring wire from terminal 3 on the back of the plate. This is the ring wire for old phones and is not required when using filters. It can cause a lot of interference to the ADSL signal.
When they have done that, phone Sky and ask them to remove the cap as improvements have been made to the line.

As an aside mickp8, this may well be of interest to you if you do not have a NTE5 master socket. This is a legal way of saying yourself £170 that BT would charge to fit one.
Clarity UK - ADSL BT Linebox Adaptor Faceplate
If your competent then it is a good option to legally fit a NTE5 master socket.
