      Is speedtest.net reliable?

      Hi,

I am on Sky BB Max & am pretty close to my exchange. I have been on Sky BB for about 18 months now.

As much as I understand that none of these speed tests are wholly accurate, I have always been under the impression that Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test was one of the more reliable ones.

I have always had consistent results, via a wired connection, of around 12 to 13 Mbps. However, over the last few weeks that site has been returning results of only around 7Mbps.

My router still shows as syncing with the exchange at around 15Mbps.

I have logged a call with Sky CS, but have since stumbled across this test site:
Namesco BroadbandMax ADSL Broadband Bandwidth speedtest | Test your ADSL Broadband connection speed

Using this site I am getting consistent results of around 12.5Mbps.

As if that weren't strange enough, it would appear that this site uses the same test host as the London server on Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test, which is the server I test with. Both appear to be hosted by "Namesco" using "Ookla test metrics".

Is any one aware of the difference between these two? Is speedtest.net no longer reliable?

What do people generally consider as the most accurate way of testing the speeds that you are receiving?

As an aside, the reason that I started testing is that my browsing seems very "jumpy" to say the least. Sometimes pages are very slow to load, and at times I have to close the tab & try again.

      I am using WinXP SP3 & Firefox v3.

      Thanks,
      Simon

I personally dont rate the speedtest sites as there are so many people using them.
You could try the skyuser one as its not available to such a wide audience and therefore should give better results - Sky User - Broadband Speed Tester
Other ways of gauging speed would be to dl a large file from a webserver such as a large game patch etc and note what the speed maxes out at - FilePlanet: Call of Duty: World at War Patch v1.2
If you use a torrent client try and max that out, you would really need to be a private member of a torrent site for this to work well.

      Re: Is speedtest.net reliable?

Ok, thanks for the advice. I tried the Sky User speed test and got approx 13Mbps down & 623Kbps up.

I then d/loaded WinXP SP3 directly from Microsoft.

      File size: 324,030KB
      Time taken: 2m31s
      I make that 16.76Mbps.

So that demonstrates that something is now preventing speedtest.net from giving proper results. Strange, when the same server from the different URL gives better results.

So downloads are fine. Any ideas what could cause the stuttering web browsing?

(I'd best call sky CS and cancel my call back )

      Thanks,
      Simon

Dodgy websites Tbh I'm not sure - does it still seem slow in ie ?
As you say the dl speed is fine so they should load pretty much instantly.

I never use IE. Always Firefox. Perhaps I'll D/L IE8 and give that a go. Thanks.

I didnt get on with the beta version of 8 that came with the Win7 beta, so still use IE7, latest may be ok tho, worth a try just to see if it sorts the problem.

FF for me too - Also, Ihave found Speedtest and that other one to be quite variable - And wireless can wreak havoc with speed too..

If your router tells you it's sync'd at a certain speed, then afaic, thats my speed!
