A line fault can also cause what you describe. What you could try is dialling a number, leave the phone open and reboot your router. If it reconnects at a higher speed, then immediately drops when the phone is hung up that would be a good pointer. I can't remember the actual name for it, something like a 'high resistance fault'. I think it is caused by a poor joint somewhere which the extra voltage of the phone call 'bridges' and allows a good ADSL signal. Not very technical, but it is something like that.

Cheers for that. I'll try it tonight and see what happens.

I suppose if it is at fault I'll have to get BT out to fix the line as the line is with BT (not sky). My assumption is that if they do fix this it will be free as there is something physically wrong with the line.

I had a similar problem a few years back at my parents house and this was down to a dodgy connection in the local cabinet box.

      EDIT...
I've just tried calling my home phone whilst remotely viewing my router and when the phone rings the noise margin goes from about 7db to 9db. When i hang up from the answerphone the noise margin drops to 1 then climbs again. Most odd
