Upgraded from Mid to Max.... Speeds have DROPPED?!

      Hey guys!

OK i was on the mid package since sept 08 and have gone live with the Max package as of yesterday (22/4/09)

Before, i was getting constant connection speeds of just over 8000kbps (presumably capped?)

Now, it wont go above 7616 kbps!

I rang sky up and they basically fobbed me off with some BS excuse!

Can anyone shed any light on why its done this and how i can rectify it?

      Thanks

Your noise margin is very low, which suggests there is excess noise on your line. If you have a Test socket, plug in there and take the stats. Sky were not BSing you, your line is already getting more than it can handle.

The attenuation on your line indicates you should get a speed of between 7 and 8 Mbs, maybe a little bit more on ADSL2+, but with your low noise margin it would probably not run too well on your line. Your attenuation is on the borderline for ADSL2+, so if you were expecting much more speed, then I am afraid you are going to be disappointed.

Re: Upgraded from Mid to Max.... Speeds have DROPPED?!

As your noise margin is very near the default, I am afraid that is all you are going to get. There is a few dbs difference so your internal wiring may be causing a bit of interference. You could try disconnecting the ring wire from terminal 3 on the faceplate. This is not required and can cause interference.
Is your line making any noises when you phone? Try doing a quiet line test by plugging a corded phone into the Test socket, dial 17070 option 2 and listen. You should not hear any crackles snaps or pops, just a very low hum if anything.

Edit - You can ask Sky to put you on ADSL2+, but they may decline as it looks like your line will not handle it. You may find your speed gets even lower as it requires a good line to run properly..

Re: Upgraded from Mid to Max.... Speeds have DROPPED?!

Yeah the phone line seems fine, no crackles or pops or anything. Its a shame im stuck at this speed, i was praying i would get higher speeds, seeing as im about 1/4 mile from the exchange and it was a brand new line installed last september

So is there anything i can do, other than just stick with it?

once again, thanks for your replys Tom

You could ask sky to put you back onto G.DMT, and that would return you the 8mb connection speed that you have before.

Then how come he was syncing just over 8mb before and even though he is still on G.DMT why isn't he still getting just over 8mb instead of 7.6mb.

      Just interested.

now that's the question...without seeing before and after stats we'll never know...

Re: Upgraded from Mid to Max.... Speeds have DROPPED?!

This just a guess, but it is possible the increased upload speed has knocked a bit off the download. I am not sure if asymmetric works that way.
That apart, we are only taking about 4-500kbps which is less than 2dbs on the noise margin, so possibly this line has been running on the edge, with a lower than default margin. The line seems to be capped now at 7616kbps, if this was removed there is every chance that the line would sync at over 8Mbps during a quiet line period, especially if the test socket or a filtered faceplate is used.

I think this is one place where Sky go wrong, a good router with a decent line should be able to sync at its best speed, there should be no need to cap the line. Maybe the OP should ask Sky to remove the cap and allow the line to sync properly at its best speed. I know there are lines whose noise swing makes capping the line necessary, but this does not seem to be one of them. My own line for instance swings between 8.5 and 5.5, but does not drop, many have an even bigger swing without problems, this is how a router should perform.

Members who joined early will remember the problems with the first firmware, which dropped the connection if you coughed to loudly. That is a thing of the past with the new firmware, which can handle noise much better.
