New Broadband - best I can expect?

(just moved over from the US, so apologies if my *******ized english is hard to decipher)

Just got Broadband Max activated last night. Info from another site had me hoping for close to 16mb but Sky estimated I could get 8 so it was more a hope than anything. I've taken the plate off my main phone box and plugged the filter directly into the test jack.

Here are my stats (newer black 985 router so I can't get the detailed stats)

      Router Statistics

      System Up Time: 13:15:30
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 3921 4444 0 89 238 02:19:07
      LAN 100M/Full 109759 76923 0 2411 383 13:15:25
      WLAN 11M/54M 3326 0 0 9 0 13:15:13
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8160 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 23 db 12 db
Noise Margin 10 db 14 db

With that noise margin is there any chance of me getting better than 8mb?

Also, thoughts on flashing this routers firmware to the regular netgear firmware? Or is it possible there is a newer sky firmware? Mine is 2.02.44

I'm in AL1 if that helps.

Is the latest version, and works fine with very few issues if any. Mine has been absolutely rock steady.

      ADSL2+ Speed Test
We estimate your line is capable of between 16mb to 24mb broadband on an ADSL2+ service.

This ADSL2 Line Speed Calculator is a best guess only, as to the broadband speed that maybe possible on your telephone line. The checker provides results of up to 24mb with the data that is made available to us. This is purely for indication only and should not be classed as the Line Speed that you would receive on any ADSL or LLU product from another ISP.

Possibly been capped - ring Sky and do it whilst the router is plugged in test socket.

Thanks much, when is the best time to call Sky, I thought I read somewhere that after 10:30pm would work best?

It appears you are on G.DMT. You will have to ask Sky to move you to ADSL2+ to get more than 8Mb. If it is a new connection DLM will be put on the line, which will automatically put it on ADSL2+, so Sky may ask you to wait until this is done.

You are correct about the best time to phone.

Re: New Broadband - best I can expect?

and DLM takes 10 days right? I can wait.

Interesting, I checked my stats today. I haven't changed anything but now it's 7611 down and 796 up and the attenuation and margin have changed. Down is 24db attenuation and 20db margin. Up is 13db and 16db respectively.

Is a higher noise margin a good thing?

Re: New Broadband - best I can expect?

DLM is now running on your line and appears to be capping it severely. You can wait out the 10 days or phone Sky, tell them you would like your line manually configured as DLM seems to be crippling it. If you decide to wait, remember to keep your router powered up and plugged in at all times.

The high noise margin you have indicates that you should get pretty near 16Mb, when your line eventually settles.

Re: New Broadband - best I can expect?

I've been putting off calling sky but looks like I'm going to need to. For some strange reason my Up speed is now 412kb and my noise margin now says "2147483647 db"...no really. 2,147,483,647 db. I think I've won the record for highest noise margin.

This means that the noise margin has dropped so much it is showing to the router as a negative value, which the router cannot display. It is the last thing you want to see on your stats.

Re: New Broadband - best I can expect?

Just my luck. Very weird, when I unplug the cable and plug it back in, for the first minute everything is great, and then it just switches to the big long negative value. Tried both the test port and regular one. Guess I'll be calling sky.

Are you still plugged into the Test socket? Is this low noise margin on the up or downstream. Can you post your stats, when it happens?
