How Long Does It Take For Your Connection To Sync/Connect?

      Hello

Please may I ask how quickly your routers bring your connection up when reset?

My Sky BB Max is due to be set live on the 16th with a DG934G. All ready to go and will be going straight into the Master socket with no extensions, and only 500-metres from the LLU exchange.

I'm currently with BT 8Mb (for another 5-days anyway), using a DG834G v3 (true Netgear, not rebranded) running V4.01.40. It's QUICK, as in about 10-20 seconds, and never drops. Below it's been up for oh, 6-months, it just does it's thing. Download is about 6-7Mbits, upload is about 340Kbits. All good, apart from their price and constant marketing calls! And Phorm! Where they keep on redirecting URLs to their opt-out pages! Needless to say, I haven't had a problem with the BT connection at all for 3-years. It's BT themselves that finally pushed me away.

      Code:
      Sun, 2002-09-08 13:00:23 - Initialize LCP.
Sun, 2002-09-08 13:00:23 - LCP is allowed to come up.
      Sun, 2002-09-08 13:00:29 - CHAP authentication success
My next door neighbours are on C&W/Bulldog and theirs takes about 10-20 minutes to sync!!

I'm really just interested to know how quickly Sky BB syncs with the Exchange?

      With kind thanks,

      Razz (Alison)

Re: How Long Does It Take For Your Connection To Sync/Connect

I'm also on max and my V1 router will renegotiate in less than a minute if I force a disconnection.
When I initially looked at your stats I thought that the line attenuation should support the full 16 meg on max. However your noise margin is quite high, the sky routers try to establish a nm of around 7. As you will be on DLM as a new customer this may present a problem. High Nm is usually caused by noise on the line and dlm will spot this and lower the sync to stabilise the line. Anything you can do to reduce noise and get that nm down will help. Best place to start would be to check your internal wiring - this thread should help.

Re: How Long Does It Take For Your Connection To Sync/Connect

      lol you two :-)

No internal wiring here. I ripped it all out and replaced the face plates with RJ45 sockets.

The router plugs directly into the master socket (with no extensions, or wiring connecting to it). Those figures though, they're still with BT mind.

I always thought that the Line Attenuation was the one you wanted low (the loss). And the Noise Margin was the one you wanted high (how loud the signal is over the noise). ??

We'll find out what happens on Monday when it gets switched over.

I'm about 500 metres from the LLU Exchange. BT has always been stable, but when I first started out I didn't have the DG834G. Originally it was a BT Voyager 205 running into a Linksys WRT54G.

Tomorrow night I'm putting the Sky DG934G live, and hooking us upto next door's wireless with the WRT54G in bridging mode in the meantime. Just so that the Sky connection goes live, it gets the best chance from moment go and sync's immediately. Then I'll plug everything into the DS934G when it's up.

Actually... I could change the filter and plug it straight into the test socket. Yes. I'll do that (no one can see it anyway so it's not a problem). Be right back....

Re: How Long Does It Take For Your Connection To Sync/Connect

Line attenuation doesnt change ( unless you move house ) its a product of line length, the longer the line the higher the attenuation. NM can vary during the day due to outside factors but ideally the router will try to negotiate a noise margin of around 7 when connecting. This thread explains all better than I can.

Done! Straight into test socket, and new filter installed. ADSL RJ11 cable also now about 18-inches long.
