Really slow download speeds - As slow as 500kbs

      Hi,

I have just been on the phone to about 5 different people, and they still not been able to help me speed up my internet.

Apparently my line is capable of 3.5 megs and currently I have 763kbs.

Despite what it says in my profile, I have the Mid package, so upto 8 megs, but I know 3.5 megs is the tops I will recieve.

I have tried using the test socket, and that didn't help.

I really need some help soon, as this is driving me crazy now. I have had this problem since I had sky bb installed, ages ago.

      Any help largely appreciated

      Stats:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 763 kbps 412 kbps
Line Attenuation 48 db 29 db
Noise Margin 23 db 21 db

      Thanks,
      Ollie

Get into the test socket again and post a comparison set of stats. How long has the line been ADSL active?

      Hello olliea,

Well with line stats like that you sould be able to get more speed you Attenuation is not to bad but there is a issue with your noise margins and this would been to be changed ,

But as paul says go in to the test socket and repost your stats,
Also do a full set up check if needed list every thing you have connected and where it is connected .

      Great thanks people.

I will just get back into test socket and repost stats. As far as speed goes its the same, but I don't know about the others.

      Will repost in about 30mins

      ----------------------------------------------------

Ok, I plugged the router into the test socket, rebooted the router and waited about 5 minutes and got these stats:

Connection Speed 763 kbps 409 kbps
Line Attenuation 48 db 29 db
Noise Margin 28 db 21 db

Looks like the noise margin is slightly different.

Would you be able to tell me how to change the noise margins? I am using mac os x Tiger, but would be able to access an xp laptop, if needs be.

EDIT: Update - my downstream noise margin is now 27

      -----------------------------------------------------------

      My setup:

Master socket -> micro filter -> router -> computer
      .............................................-> phone line

In words, I have the master socket which has a micro filter, then from that I have one line going to a phone, and one line going to my router. From my router I have two wired connections to two different computers, also, sometimes I have an extra laptop wirelessly connected to the router. For the majority of the time, only one computer is on at one time.

Btw, sorry for the triple post. Merged

I have already called sky but they just referred me to EasyNet broadband. They couldn't do anything either and referred me to another line.

Any ideas and tips to say to them?

      Good grief

Sometimes dealing with Sky can be such a misery.

Your profile says you're on Base which offers up to 2meg. Your attenuation is low enough to support far more than that. The unchanging sync and higher noise margin when using the test socket appears to show you have been capped at 793kbps i.e. about a third of the sync you should have and are paying for.

Sorry, but only Sky can sort this out for you. If you can't face calling them then use the on-line form.

BTW, if you moved to Mid (and were uncapped) you'd get around 6meg.

EDIT: just noticed your first post says you're on Mid despite what your profile says. However, the advice is the same. You should be getting ~6meg but you're capped at under 1meg. Also, the jump in noise margin in the test socket shows you have some line noise from your home wiring which you should do something about if you want the highest speeds possible but that's a completely different issue to the cap.

Never mind guys, just phoned them again. Managed to talk to someone who knew what they were on about and got it sorted in 20 seconds. Looks like he lowered the noise margin...

      New stats:

Connection Speed 4093 kbps 765 kbps
Line Attenuation 50 db 29 db
Noise Margin 9 db 10 db

      So much better...

      Thanks all who helped

Only if the 4 meg you now have is enough. Sort out the line noise and you'll get maybe 6meg.

they actually increased the speed, leading to a lower SNR...
