New user - v slow speeds, help please

I could do with some assistance to raise my download speed. I've been connected for a little over 3 weeks now and I'm getting the following stats (when connected to the master socket)

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 105082 174120 0 316 5267 11:57:40
      LAN 100M/Full 12799 1893 0 63 19 12:57:01
      WLAN 11M/54M 199300 123634 0 5322 355 12:56:48
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 763 kbps 248 kbps
Line Attenuation 39 db 23 db
Noise Margin 23 db 2147483647 db

Any help / advice would be appreciated

      Peter

With an attenuation of 39 db you should get better than my 7meg from an attenuation of 45/46.

The 23 db looks too high, and maybe the reason why you have such slow speeds.

Have you tried the test socket behind the master socket when posting them?

Maybe best for someone else to throw some advice your way.

Re: New user - v slow speeds, help please

      Hi,

      Thanks for the quick replies

The stats I posted above were taken from the BT master test socket (behind the faceplate)

Although I cut and pasted the stats into the post above, I have double checked it this morning, and the following are now registered

      System Up Time: 23:44:23
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 999 1329 0 21 138 01:57:57
      LAN 100M/Full 16139 1893 0 38 10 23:44:18
      WLAN 11M/54M 233807 152109 0 3238 259 23:44:05
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 763 kbps 252 kbps
Line Attenuation 41 db 23 db
Noise Margin 22 db 19 db

I'm expecting about 6.5 meg based upon my distance from my local exchange, so 0.7meg is a bit of a disappointment. I would really appreciate further advice.

      Regards

      Peter

Re: New user - v slow speeds, help please

You need to ring Sky and get the cap removed, keep the router in the test socket when you phone them.

It may be worth waiting until later tonight after 10:30 or so, you have more chance of getting to CST then. Either that or ring now and face the wait

Not sure what you mean by capped. I subscribe to the mid package (8meg) if thats any use.

Yes, I do have a black netgear. There's no manufacturers reference on it, but it was supplied free issue by Sky, so I guess they're all the same

I'll give that a go. Is there a direct number to get through to the broadband team ?

Re: New user - v slow speeds, help please

A cap is a maximum speed your line will get and not go over. For some reason you have had this set quite low and your stats indicate you could/should get much better speeds.

Internal wiring is the normal reason for a cap to be put in place, by connecting to the test socket you remove the internal wiring and give a best case senario for your stats.

If when you go back to your normal setup your connection becomes unstable of the stats get worse you may have to re-wire your phone points, cross this bridge when it happens, plenty of people on here can assist you and it is quite easy to do.

First thing is to get the cap removed and to speed up your connection.

There is no direct number. 08442 410515. Say you have a slow speed issue, make sure your in the test/master socket also.

When you get through to CST, explain you have a black netgear also and they should work the settings around that, as you may have issues later on if it's not nipped in the bud now.

After the call all should be sorted.
