      Really confused regarding speeds

Okay first of all I THOUGHT I was fairly knowledgeable regarding Sky broadband (that was silly of me wasn't it)

I have been with Sky broadband for about a year on the mid package and got download speeds ranging from about 4.5 Kb/s to about 6.5 Kb/s according to speedtest.net and the speed test on these forums.

Anyway I have great noise figures and great Attenuation figures and all the sites say I could get between 16 - 22Mb connection I am around 720 metres from your exchange (as the crow flies) according to DSLZone although I thought I was even closer than that.

So my figures are surprising me and I'm not sure what to make of them.

I am connecting to Sky at full speed
      Code:
      ADSL Link---------- Downstream--- Upstream

      Connection Speed------16379 kbps-----764 kbps
      Line Attenuation-------14.5 db-------6.2 db
      Noise Margin -----------8.8 db-------17.5 db
But my speed tests bear no relation to the sort of speed I thought I should be getting (bear in mind my connection was only upgraded at lunchtime today) especially since I seem to be getting slightly worse speeds than before the upgrade.

Any ideas or suggestions would be gratefully received.

      Thanks in advance

Are you using wireless to connect from router to computer? If so try a wired connection and see what results you get then. You have lovely line stats

Nope, I am on a wired connection with my router no more than 7 feet from the main phone socket.

Have you disabled wireless in your router settings (wireless access off and disable broadcast name)? are you running Vista?

      Re: Really confused regarding speeds

I'm running windows XP (SP3) and internet explorer 7 but I haven't disabled wireless as I sometimes use a laptop wirelessly (and as the wife uses a laptop a lot of the time I don't want to be cut off in my prime so to speak)

However there were no other connections whilst I was running the speed tests

PS I meant to say thanks for trying to help

Believe it or not I have success, it seems it took a while for the connection to sort itself out and its now running fine (I'm pleased to say)

      Re: Really confused regarding speeds

Oh Good, I was going to mention this but Speedtest.Net is very inaccurate. try the test on this site, and could you change your profile from Mid to Max as this causes no end of confusion Ta.
I dont know if an upgrade results in DLM running but just in case leave the router on for 10 days or so.

      Re: Really confused regarding speeds

Well the first thing I should do is once again thank you for trying to help, I have to assume there is a lot of adjustments happening at Sky as the speed test results are going up and down like a yoyo!

Currently they have gone way down again and I am back under 5000 Kbps again so I just have to hope for the best.

      Re: Really confused regarding speeds

We need a bit of feedback here as to wether DLM runs for updates. From what you are saying Rebel, it looks like it may.
