Terrible download speed with 16 meg broadband

We've had the 16 meg package installed for around 9 days now and this is the sorry speed we seem to be achieving.

We have a phone line extension plugged into a 2 way socket at the telephone point. At the end of this phone line extension we have a microfilter with a phone cable plugged into it with the other end plugged into the ADSL port on the Sagem router. The Sagem router is plugged directly into the wall. There's two laptops in the house that connect wirelessly, a phone line connected to a sky plus box, and xbox live hooked up.

Now I understand that Sky configure your line speed for up to 2 weeks after installation but this speed seems ridiculous. We were told via post that the line speed would be set to a low rate for the first 2 weeks but a download of a file is reaching speeds of around 100kb/s which seems real slow.

Are there any steps I can take to try and improve this speed?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Oh and here's my router statistics:

Try the connection in the master socket/test socket, and then post your stats. Maybe the extension causing the problem.

So Socket then filter then router

yes, Firstly get rid of any extensions for this test. Plug a microfilter into the first socket that comes into the house ( the master socket ) then plug only your router into it then goto the router stats and see if your sync speed or noise margin increases. The noise margin is your problem but i think you could only get about 6mbs on your current line attenuation which is 55.5 db.

Post back stats after you have done the above and then plug a microfilter at every point where you plug something into it , i.e if you have 4 phones in your house you need a microfilter at every point so you will need 4 microfilters plugged in.

Re: Terrible download speed with 16 meg broadband

Okay I've tried the microfilter directly into the main phone point and only the router connected to it. Here are the router stats:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1023 kbps 525 kbps
Line Attenuation 55.0 db 33.4 db
Noise Margin 12.0 db 10.5 db

So not much change I don't think. I'll give the test socket a go. It's just a matter of unscrewing the face plate on the main phone socket right?

      No, big change actually

You appear to be capped so your sync won't change (DLM will have done that). However, look at the change in noise margin. This shows that the master socket connection is massively better.

Connected that way and uncapped (if DLM has fixed you at that sync), your speed would at least double, probably more.

I've reconnected it to how it was and my noise margin now reads 11.0 db for downstream instead of the 3.4 db it was in my OP. I've also tried connecting my laptop to the router via an ethernet cable but still have the same speeds and relatively close noise margins.

      DLM means?

Re: Terrible download speed with 16 meg broadband

As saturday says when your dlm has finished ( if not already ) you can phone sky and you will be good for at least 2mbs connection which is double what you get now.

Good result as result of just plugging in microfilters though.

Well putting it back to it's original set up (all extensions etc) my noise margins are consistantly now 11.0+ db, it seems very odd that the reading in my original post is 3.4 db.

So I could potentially only get just double of what it is now? Have we wasted our time with a 16 meg package?

I'll give the test socket a go tomorrow and post back. Thanks for your input on this guys.

Short answer, unless you need the unlimited download, yes.
The maximum you would get with a very good line is about 4Mb.
