Sky internet speeds - which figures to believe?

I contacted Sky support today to report a problem I've noticed recently with significantly slower internet access.

I've run three independent tests (including Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test), all of which are showing download speeds of sub-1 Mbps (975 kbps to be precise). Usually, I get around 5 Mbps!

The Sky technician asked me to check my router status to see what that was showing. It paints a completely different picture...

      Downstream connection speed = 5824 kbps (5.8Mb)
UpStream Connection Speed = 448 kbps

So, the independent tests and my gut feel tell me I'm getting less than 1 Mbps downstream and and my router reckons I'm getting 5.8 Mbps!

I am currently awaiting a callback from Sky tech support but the first technician I spoke to implied that the speeds showing in my router stats are the true figures. I'm not convinced that this is the case. Surely, three independent tests all producing very similar results can't be wrong? But how can I argue my case to Sky if they insist on going by the router stats?

      Advice welcome.

Are you using wireless to connect your computer to the router? If so try a speedtest from this site using the yellow ethernet cable

You are on BTs ADSLMax, which Sky use for Connect. It is notorious for being throttled and if you do a search on the forum for Connect, you will find dozens of threads on this subject. In the last few weeks it seems to have got very bad.

Re: Sky internet speeds - which figures to believe?

Thank you Isitme. You are right - I am using Sky's Connect service and being connected to a rural BT exchange, I suspect you are probably right about the BT ADSL equipment. Sky must have responded to my complaint because I've just re-run the speed tests and am now getting between 3 to 4.8Mb download speed.

(Brian69 - speed tests produced same results for both wired and wireless connections to my router).

Sky have done nothing - speed is throttled between 6PM(ish) and midnight...any other time and it's back to normal...do another test this evening and you'll see what i mean ...
